Film festival directors create fair and balanced programs for their festivals. Notwithstanding the quality of the films, a festival with all Black films is not necessarily that interesting as a mainstream festival, but opens up the doorway of opportunity for niche market festivals. As a filmmaker, when I set out to identify the top 10 festivals for Black Filmmakers, I was unable to locate any source identifying that list. Through my own experiences living and working in Los Angeles in the Entertainment industry for over 12 years, I was able to create my own list of the top 10 film festivals for Black Filmmakers. Unable to narrow the list down to 10 of equal or greatest importance, my list actually has 12 festivals on it.

1. American Black Film Festival

Originally dubbed the Acapulco Film Festival, the American Black Film Festival found its way to Los Angeles by way of Miami. Produced by Film Life, Inc., who also produces the Black Movie Awards, the American Black Film Festival is the most sleek Black Film Festival, replete with star studded Black films made independently from the studio system.

2. Pan African Film & Arts Festival, Los Angeles

With an attendance of over 200,000 people for the film and arts festival, PAFF is the largest and one of the most prestigious Black film festivals worldwide. Each year PAFF screens over 150 films from the U.S., Africa, the Caribbean, South America, the South Pacific, Europe and Canada.

3. Hollywood Black Film Festival

Run concurrently with the Infotainment Conference, the Hollywood Black Festival is a formidable stop for Black Filmmakers, whereas many agents, distributors and sales agents, specifically looking for Black content, attend it.

4. Urbanworld Film Festival

Once home to its own distribution outlet, the Urbanworld Film Festival still is a choice of studios and independents to debut feature films, network and discover emerging talent.

5. San Diego Black Film Festival

Formerly known as the Noir Film Festival, the San Diego Black Film Festival has grown into a classy event where filmmakers can be treated with class and respect.

6. Black International Cinema, Berlin

In existence for over 20 years and produced by the Fountainhead Tanz Theatre in Berlin, the Black International Cinema Film Festival offers Black Filmmakers at -large the opportunity to screen in Europe and build a bridge for distribution in the Pan-African marketplace.

7. Pan African Film Festival, Cannes

Although not hosted by the French government like Festival de Cannes, the Cannes Pan African Film Festival offers Black Filmmakers the Cannes moniker as well as the opportunity to share their work with the European marketplace and make inroads for European distribution.

8. Urban Film Series

The Urban Film Series is not actually a film festival, but rather a film screening and discussion series. Set in the nations capital, the organization and publicity engine for the Urban Film Series is stellar and will garner your film media attention throughout the nation's capitol. In addition, the Urban Film Series also host film screenings and discussions in other major markets for the Black community.

9. New York African Diaspora Film Festival

The ADFF screens films from the African Diaspora from all around the world. Like screening in Hollywood, screening in New York is never a bad idea. The New York media serves as a surrogate for the nation's media outlet and the ADFF is successful in getting its films respectable media coverage.

10. Roxbury Film Festival

One of the largest festivals of its kind in the New England area, the Roxbury Film Festival has been a consistent staple in providing filmmakers of color an opportunity to screen their work and allow their voices to be heard.

11. San Francisco Black Film Festival

SFBFF has become a driving force integrating the work of independent Black filmmakers into the mainstream. Several films, which had their premiere at SFBFF, have secured distribution.

12. BFM International Film Festival

BFM International Film Festival, sponsored by Black Filmmaker Magazine, is the premiere Black world and urban cinema festival in the United Kingdom. In addition to its premiere event in London, BFM also hosts several mini-festivals throughout the UK.

Eurocinema brings you another great group of films in February. This is your last month to see THE EDGE OF LOVE with Kiera Knightly and Sienna Miller, so if you haven’t seen it yet, just check your on demand menu for the title or look for Eurocinema.

Coming this month 3 new films a comedy from Russia a thriller and a documentary from Italy.

Let’s start in Russia with FAT, STUPID RABBIT; Russian with English subtitles, directed by Slava Ross this film has won 3 international film awards and stars Aleksey Maklakov (DAY WATCH, NIGHT WATCH) and Nikita Mikhalkove (12) and critics call it “a little known Russian Gem”. Vodka, women, and dreams define the black comedy FAT STUPID RABBIT, The film set in a children’s theater in a small Russian town, centers on the lives of drunken actors who perform as pigs, goats, and plants. Arcady has spent the last ten years playing the role of a Rabbit. He understands that this may be the only part left in his actor’s life, but he wants more, he wants real art. Then a sponsor comes forward and wants to create a new show and wants Arcady to play the lead role. But Arcady will have to make creative concessions. A rare mix of a French drama, English humor and Russian depression.

We move on to Italy for THE UNKNOWN WOMAN, Italian w/English subtitles a multi-award winning film (13 awards) and the official Italian entry for the Academy Awards. Directed by Guiseppe Tornatore (CINEMA PARADISO, BAARIO, MALENA) and he wrote EVERYTHING IS FINE which stars Robert DeNiro, Drew Barrymore and Kate Beckinsale and it is still in theatres around the country.  THE UNKNOWN WOMAN (LA SCONOSCIUTO) stars Ksenya Rappaport, Claudia Gerina and Pierfrancesco Favino. A Ukrainian woman named Irena calculatedly insinuates herself into the lives of a young, affluent Italian family. Stopping at nothing to become the couple’s trusted maid and the beloved nanny to their fragile young daughter.  Irena risks everything in her quest to uncover the truth about the family. Like an intricately constructed jigsaw puzzle, THE UNKNOWN WOMAN reveals piece by piece the enigma of Irena’s past. Roger Ebert gave it 3 ½ stars and calls it “Hitchcockian and it has an Ennio Morricone score as well”.

Also from Italy making its North American debut the same day it is released on DVD and theatrically, MAYBE GOD IS ILL (FORSE DIO E MALATO) Italian w/English subtitles, Directed by Franco Brogi Taviani, from a book and the travels of Walter Veltroni. The filmed sequences were shot in a number of different African countries, Kenya, Guinea, Angola, Uganda, Mozambique, South Africa, with each addressing one or more issues selected from among the many that are dramatically and, at times, explosively relevant to much of Africa today. The unifying motif of the film is the presence of singers, storytellers and musicians, both traditional and modern. By narrating a number of episodes interspersed with slices of real life they contribute to providing a portrait of a continent undoubtedly burdened by any number of painful, often cruel situations, but also full of life and, in many respects, unpredictable, with a magnetic allure that is hard to resist. WINNER X IBTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ON HUMAN RIGHTS. Piero Spilla, Vice President, Italian Cinema Journalists says “A Film that tells about, that narrates, explains, is indignant, is touched and touches.”

On a film set do adult actors have to get police checks to work with children?

I'm pretty sure teachers and anyone else working with children have to so would they?

Not usually. They belong to the Screen Actor's Guild already. If the film content is mature, safety of child actors is the director's responsibility. Liability for violations goes to the production company.
