Maintenance may not be very much fun, but it is necessary in order to prevent things from breaking. Especially in the case of fishing equipment, we have to do certain tasks after every use to keep our rods, reels, bait, etc in immaculate condition. After all, fishing equipment, especially if it is meant for saltwater fishing (because of the larger size and greater quality needed), can be incredibly expensive. Not maintaining your equipment is a waste of money.

Reels need to be cleaned and lubricated after every use. It is really simple to do: remove the parts of your rod that move, and clean them using water and a dish soap without any harsh ingredients. An incredibly small amount of oil-the key here is small-should be applied in order to reduce friction. Too much oil can lead to poor performance and can be disadvantageous to the parts. Lubrication is key, though, to ensure that the parts work together instead of creating friction and possibly damaging the reel. You can buy oils designed solely for the purpose of lubricating fishing reels. Cleaning and lubrication is crucial after saltwater fishing, because you must remove the salt that sticks to your rod after the water has evaporated. Some rods come with a protective coat, but the chemicals in salt will eat away at this layer eventually, so your rod will still be damaged.

Storage can be a potentially damaging place for your equipment to be damaged, so it is necessary to keep an eye on them even if you are not using them. The proper way to store a rod is with the drag set as low as it will go, or even to free spool. Turning the clicker on will prevent the spool from unwinding, which is possible in storage. Be careful of where you place your rods, make sure it is in a dry location away from insects and rodents.

Proper maintenance is crucial if you want to keep your fishing equipment in working order. It is might seem like a daunting task, but at least it is as easy as cleaning, lubrication, and proper storage. Always clean it after using, and lubricate the moving parts. Make sure you store it appropriately to prevent your equipment from breaking when you are not even using it. By maintaining your equipment, you are really getting the full value out of your rod.

BaitRunner: The Top-of-the-Line Shimano Reel

Your favorite part of the week is the weekend (whose favorite part of the week isn't the weekend anyway?). But your case is different from most people. You can already feel the spray of the water. You can already imagine the taste of the salt of the open sea. And the sense of great adventure is unwaveringly beckoning you to another weekend of fishing heaven. Yep, it's the lifestyle and the choices that set you apart from the pack.

Even before the weekend comes, your gear has been prepared and you're itching to try out your new Shimano BaitRunner. You bought yourself a B series after having been a very avid BaitRunner Classic user. You had to choose among 3 models. A 3500, a 4500, and a 6500. You picked the one that was the best match for the style of fishing that you have. And yes, you recall that it was an easy choice. And easy it was, with all the new design innovations and superb engineering. But Bob, your lifelong neighbor and fishing buddy is skeptical about the BaitRunner's features. So you set out to prove him wrong. And prove him wrong you did with the unbelievable catch you made.

Now Bob is a believer. Who wouldn't be awed with a Shimano Reel that has a graphite frame, a graphite side plate, a graphite rotor, a diecast aluminum spool, flat T type handle grip, a waterproof drag, anti-rust bearings, a dyna balance, a power roller III, a power handle torpedo knob, 3 + 1 stainless steel ball bearings, an automatic strike alarm and a non-corrosive graphite construction?

You showed him the BaitRunner features. He could not believe how easy it was to change the front drag setting. (Turn the notch clockwise to increase drag strength. To reach the maximum drag, just tighten the notch. Turn the notch counter-clockwise and the drag strength is decreased.) When you adjusted the BaitRunner Tension Setting, you just flipped the BaitRunner to the On position and you set the reel in a total free spool. Adjustments were made with the different types of bait you had. The sleek look of the Shimano BaitRunner is not just its source of beauty, you'd have to count in the smooth functions. You had it easy because you just had to turn the tension dial all the way to the left and you got the lightest free spool tension. You turned the dial to the right and the free spool tension was increased. You wanted to fish your bait effectively in a controlled free spool and you just had to flip the BaitRunner's lever to the BaitRunner On position. To set the hook, you just had to turn the handle forward and the BaitRunner immediately shifted to Drag On.

You've never had a baitrunner reel function quite like the Shimano BaitRunner. Now, you tell Bob and all the rest of your fishing buddies that to get the best deals for their Shimano BaitRunner purchases, Sea Isle Tackle is the place to go.

A really good catfish spinning reel?

I just got a Berkley glowstik 7' anr it came with a reel on it, but I want to use heavyer line. I like spinning reels, looking for one with adjustable drag, and bait clicker. Also one that can cast far with bigger line. Any help would be great, if you could just tell me brands to look into that be cool too. Just going to use this pole for fishing on the bottom of lakes and ponds, maybe sum dams. CATFISHING SPINNING REEL

Changing to a bigger reel for your combo might not be a good option. Bigger reels are almost always heavier than smaller ones. The balance of the setup will change. If you changed the reel to something big enough to make a difference, I am sure your setup will be heavy at the handle.

Your reel already came with adjustable drag. The drag adjustment knob is either in the front of the spool or behind the body of the reel. If you want a clicker or bite alarm, you will have to get a baitcasting reel or a small conventional reel that's equipped with a clicker. Spinning reels don't have a clicker you could switch on and off.

If you want to cast bigger lines further with spinning reels, you will have to get bigger rods and reels. When you cast a spinning setup, your line will bump into line guides on the rod and slow your line down. This is why thicker lines have shorter casting distance than thinner lines. You need a bigger spinning rod to cast thick lines further because bigger rods got bigger line guides; your line will not bump on bigger line guides as much.

If you want use heavier lines and cast longer distance, your best choice would be replacing the mono line with braid lines. If you want to do anything else, get a bigger rod and reel. Don't use lines heavier than your rod could handle though. I think your rod was rated for lines up to 17 or 20 pound lines. You better check the markings on your rod or search for your rod specifications online before you change your line.
