Adobe photoshop CS2 help? I want to add effects to pictures of me and my boyfriend?

I'm doing this for my one year anniversary with my boyfriend. This is one of the gifts (ie - photoshopping our pictures) Well I have a very old version, I know. But I've always been interested in graphic designing. Can someone tell me BASIC stuff to edit pictures/make banner and graphics? Like how to make a shimmery background or how to add an effect to a persons face in the picture? I just want to know what is used for what so later I know what to click on accordingly and then I'll experiment and manage myself. Please can I get the basic help? Thank you all!

Basic effects to add to a picture, and this is really basic. Go to Filter > then choose from (Artistic-Other) All those are different effects to work around with the image.

Another thing is to go Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation

This will change colors in the picture pretty neat to play around with.
