Sometimes as a parent you may feel like nothing more than a broken record. "Pick up your toys;" "Do your homework;" "Eat your vegetables;" and "Don't hit your brother" become everyday mantras that you feel like you are chanting to yourself.

Getting kids to listen can be one of the most frustrating aspects of parenthood. It could be a discipline problem, but if you've ruled this option out it could mean your child's attention wanders before the sentence is even out of your mouth.

Many studies show that activities like television and video games lower children's attention spans. When a child constantly receive entertainment through these devices, they develop and increasing desire for instant entertainment. When they get used to something fast-pace and exciting like a video game, mom or dad's voice becomes very boring by comparison.

Moderating your child's time in front of the TV, computer, and video games will help their attention span, especially if their alternative activities involve other children or games that require their complete attention. Connor Hodum takes karate class, and his dad Daniel has seen an improvement in his ability to listen.

"Connor's listening and understanding has gotten a lot better since he started karate," Daniel said. "His attention span has also been better and we are still working on it."

Daniel hit on an important point about improving your child's attention span and listening skills: it is a work in progress. Making them shut off the TV for one night isn't going to get the job done. Make activities that help your child pay attention part of your daily routine.

Reading is a great way to help your child's attention span. Encourage him to read something he is interested in, whether it's a magazine, a novel, or a comic book. If he finds the material boring paying attention will be harder than ever. Ask him about the things he reads over dinner to practice recalling the details of what he read.

If your child is too young to read himself, read to him. After the story, ask your child questions to see what he remembers about it. See how much of the story he can relate back to you.

Even repeating back directions you give your child can help increase their listening skills. It helps you make sure they are really listening to and comprehending what you tell them, and decreases the likelihood that you will have to tell them again.

Studies have shown that music increases listening skills. Spend time listening to music or dancing with your children. Have them pick their favorite songs and help them make a CD they can listen to. Add some of your own favorites and explain why you like them or what they remind you of. Setting study material, like state capitals or multiplication tables, to music can also be a helpful memory tool for your children.

Another common factor attributed to decreased attention span is sleep depravation. Children need eight to nine hours of sleep per night, and if they are not getting the recommended amount, this could be one of the reasons they are having trouble listening and concentrating. Set a firm bedtime every night to make sure your child is getting the sleep he needs.

Teaching your child to be a good listener takes a lot of work and a lot of patience. A good attention span comes easier to some than others, so remember to work at your child's pace. If you introduce listening activities little by little into his daily routine, his attention span will gradually increase.
