Why is my bathroom ceiling and cornice paint cracking?

We have painted our bathroom ceiling and the cornices in our spare room with matt emulsion (water based) paint and within a day the pain began to crack badly.

The cornice is mostly cracking where the old pain had cracked off and left the cornice exposed.

The bathroom ceiling is newly re-plastered and we painted with a 50/50 paint/water mix first then two coats.

Yet, we also painted the bathroom and bedroom *walls* with this paint, both newly re-plastered, and they DIDNT crack.

What should we do?
OK, thanks for the cause but what about the solution? sand and re-paint? new type of paint?

This happens when the plaster hasn't dried properly. Drying times vary greatly depending on the background surface and its suction properties. You basically have a layer of moisture between plaster and paint causing it to peel. It sounds like it needs longer for the plaster to dry. 6 weeks is not uncommon a drying time in bathrooms !!
