Boxing's Bare Knuckle Pioneers

Before the formal boxing games started, we have the rough, bare knuckle fist fights that began during the 18th century in England.  Shortly afterward, the sport got bigger in America.  From both these places, champions were created and below are the profiles of some of the pioneer boxing champions who helped bring about boxing as we know it.

The first boxing champion to be noted was James Fig, who had a 15 year reign as a champion.  Fig wore the championship crown until he died in 1740.  Then the father of boxing James Broughton took over, he was a very good boxer but was more remembered for his work in formalizing boxing rules.  He set up the foundation for Broughton boxing rules which served as the first set of basic boxing rules that boxers followed till 1838, and it was about 2 years after this that he by accident killed an opponent in the ring.

His rules were brought about to stop the free for all brawls that quite frequently happened in boxing arenas as well as shaping the art of boxing. It was because of him that boxers began to see how important it was to practice the systematic boxing techniques, instead of haphazardly throwing punches.  

It was when Daniel Mendoza, showed in the ring a systematic approach to the boxing sport that it finally was freed from being an anything goes sport.  He brought about a more thought out, scientific approach to the sport, where boxers were using strategies and skills.  It is ironic to think he was only a champion for one year that being from 1794 to 1795.

By this time boxing was already getting popular in America.  Therefore, the two free African-American champions Bill Richmond and Tom Molineux got in matches with the best British fighters, and the championship was brought home.  It was at the time of 1810 that Tom Molineux became the very first American champion when he won the match against Tom Cribb.

In America in 1816 the first boxing match was held with British boxing rules between Jacob Hyer and Tom Beasley.  It was twenty years later that, the then reigning British champion James Burke also known as "the deaf" by ship went to New Orleans to have a match with the Irish champion  Sam O'Rourke.  It was in the year 1841 that the first formal American boxing championship took place between Jacob Hyer's son Tom Hyer and Yankee Sullivan.

Shortly after this, John Heenan, who was more known as The Benica boy went to England to get in a match with Tom Sawyer this being one of the first transatlantic fights.  Tom Sawyer was the reigning English champion at that point.

What was known as The London Prize Ring Rules was at that point the only set of rules in boxing, until 1867 when the Marques of Queensberry brought about a new set of rules.  At this point this was somehow the mother of the modern boxing rules as the rules that were being enforced at that time resembled the old rules to a certain degree.  The new set of rules required that boxers wear gloves and that each round should only be 3 minutes.

The public liked this and agreed with it and these new rules came into play.  Under the Queensberry Rules the last pre-modern boxing champion John L Sullivan was the champion.  He was also known in reference to the bare knuckles fights as the last champion of that and also the first heavy weight champion.

Whether its from the bloody brawls of the working classes or a high class boxing match between nobles, boxing has definitely made itself popular and made some boxing greats worthy of being put in boxing's hall of fame.

Yeah

We still have a few good documentaries - like Super-size me, The Cove (not for those who adore Dolphins), I.O.U.S.A., and pray the Devil back to Hell.

Its just that the people who run the media prefer big budget audience grabbers.
