Underwater Cameras are cameras that are specially designed for underwater use or in circumstances that requires protection to prevent any water and pressure damage. There are many types of underwater cameras, depending on your budget and uses.

There are underwater cameras that are simply disposed of after use. These are the cheapest type of underwater camera available in the market. They have the capacity to take between 20 to 30 pictures, and photos can easily be developed. They are waterproof enough to be used in harsh rain and snow storms, and are usually tolerant of being fully submerged up to twenty or thirty feet.

There are also underwater cameras that are cheap reloadables. These cameras are designed with economy of price in mind. These are very similar to disposable underwater cameras, expect that the user can replace the film and use the camera multiple times. They are usually capable of greater water depths than their disposable counterparts.

Underwater cameras are designed for one-Button-Operation and can be set to Land or Sea modes plus modes that take into account the unique aspects of underwater photography. Cameras also feature three dedicated underwater external flash modes, allowing for more exposure control when using an external flash. For perfectly lit photos in any situation, users can toggle among Macro Flash, Portrait Flash and Far Flash modes, which adjust exposure based on camera-to-subject distance.

While an on-camera flash helps illuminate objects below the surface, cameras are also compatible with external flash units, which ignite the vivid colors of the underwater environment and allows users to illuminate objects from different angles. Because the external flash is a unit activated via the on-camera flash, no sync cord is necessary. Set the camera to "External Flash," and it automatically de-activates the digital pre-flash.

To compensate for low-light conditions that naturally occur as divers travel below the water's surface, cameras can adjust the shutter speed and aperture automatically to compensate for difficult light conditions, ensuring vivid images without worry of underexposure.

Photos can be composed via a large color LCD monitor on the back of the camera; or users can frame subjects through a top-mounted SportsFinder. Either way, composition is simple, even when viewing subjects through a dive mask. To help conserve power during underwater adventures, users often shut off LCD monitors while the camera is on and compose photos using large top-mounted viewfinders.

With the many technological advances of recent years, underwater photographers now no longer have to compromise on quality. Users are almost guaranteed to return to land with a stunning set of images.

The most basic flash units are for ideal for casual photographing of family etc… or if you are out shooting still life on a dull day and need that extra bit of fill light, it would be a perfect solution. The basic flash units are also beneficial for their size; smaller sizes mean less weight and easier to transport, perfect for the smaller more compact SLR’s and point and shoots which have a hotshoe (the connection plate on the camera to mount the flash).

Even these flash units can have a flash output twice or three times greater than that of the built in flash.
Moving on from the basic models, the mid range and professional models are supplied with a much greater array of functions, settings and controls leaving the photographer with a much greater scope on power output, manual and ETTL settings, as well as custom settings, exposure compensation, etc... of course with these extra functions comes a cost. They can be quite expensive but are well worth the money utilised correctly.

The advanced flash units also have a slave function, which allows you to use them as secondary flash units. Slave units are triggered by the primary flash unit, which is mounted on your camera. It is a very useful function, which allows you to have greater input on the lighting, and it aids in the reduction of unsightly background shadows, which may occur. There is another useful function called curtain sync which allows you (when shooting long exposures) to have a light trail following a moving subject. The curtain sync is the flash firing just before the shutter closes.

Another use for the curtain sync mode is shooting portraits indoors where you would like to include the background in your shot. By using the curtain sync mode, the shutter remains open long enough to allow ambient light from your background into your camera, then the flash fires before the shutter closes thereby “freezing” your main subject.

Another useful addition to the flash units is the AF-assist beam, which are used for low light conditions where autofocus may otherwise be difficult. Some flash units come with a pull out Fresnel lens to allow for the use of wide-angle lenses. The higher end flash units are also manufactured with a small white reflector to get the most out of using a bounced flash (flash reflected off the white reflector and “bounced” onto your subject, rather than firing the flash directly towards your subject).

How can i make my camera not flash?

I have a FinePix A400. And i was wondering how to make the camera not flash? I jus don't like the look of how it makes me look on the picture. And does anyone know how to make the camera flash brighter so it makes me look white? Sometimes i like the look of it. Thanks. ♥

Go to page 43-44 for setting the flash to behave how you want it. You can make it not fire no matter what, fire no matter what, or leave it on auto, plus a few other options.

To make yourself look lighter, go to page 52 to see how to adjust "exposure compensation." Adding EV makes you brighter, subtracting makes you darker, and the good news is you don't need the flash to use it.
