Depth of field (DOF) in photography is the portion of depth of an image or view that is in focus and sharp. You've probably seen a photo at one time or another that had a subject in focus and either the foreground or background appeared blurry and out of focus. The portion of the photo that was in focus from foreground to background refers to DOF.

When deliberately considered in composition decisions, DOF can produce dramatic effects. It lends itself to helping draw an observer to the desired subject and sparks an artistic effect that enhances imagination. 

There are three fundamental concepts to consider:  aperture, focal length and focus distance.

Aperture, measured in f-stops, can decrease a DOF by widening (smaller f-stop number) or increase it by narrowing (higher f-stop number). If you adjust your aperture to enhance your DOF consideration, you'll likely have to make a corresponding adjustment to your shutter speed. If you choose to use aperture, you'll be better served to be shooting in aperture priority mode so your adjustments to the f-stop are more readily available and results realized.

The second way to affect DOF is with focal length; the longer the focal length of the lens (measured in millimeters), the shallower the field. Shorter lenses produce deeper sharpness through the depth of the photo.  So lens selection should be a consideration if DOF is deliberate during composition strategy. If your lens is selected for other considerations, use aperture or focus distance to create your desired result.

Finally, focus distance can be used. The closer the camera is to the subject, the shallower the DOF. Conversely, the further the camera is from the subject the deeper the field. In wildlife photography, this will likely be the least practical way to affect your DOF, as shots are often opportune and time isn't afforded to adjust distance from the subject.

Using a zoom lens and shooting in aperture mode are the most effective means of controlling your DOF in wildlife photography. Many wildlife photographers will have a zoom lens mounted for bringing subjects closer. By consciously shortening the focal length prior to shutter release, DOF can be increased. Additionally, by being ready to quickly adjust aperture just prior to shutter release, the field can also be affected.

These concepts are worthy of practice prior to hitting the field in search of wild subjects. Try the different strategies around the house. Eventually, you'll build instinctive responses that will let you affect DOF with very little thought - you'll simply respond. Until you've established this instinct, consider a note card fastened to your camera strap. Try using a small plastic sleeve, like you'd see holding a suitcase owner tag, and slip a business card in it with short notes to keep you straight. I use this for any concept I'm trying to master, especially when I alter my field work flow, or a checklist of things critical to a particular shoot.

Finally, challenge yourself to go out and shoot the same scene or subject and vary the DOF with the three methods discussed here. You'll quickly realize the dramatic effect DOF can have on an image and you'll develop instinct to make rapid DOF decisions.

There are several ways to carry around your photo taker. The novices use the generic single camera straps that come with the equipment. The slightly more experienced will put it in a case that is stuffed into a pocket or a backpack. Either way, the generic single camera straps are not the way to go.

They have presented too many problems for me over the years. When you’re shooting in the field, the way you carry your equipment greatly affects your shots. Camera straps have evolved. They are not all uncomfortable, believe it or not. You do have options.

Many of the higher graded single camera straps have extra padding sewn in to make it more comfortable. These camera straps can range from $25 and up. One of the main concerns, aside from the fact that a little extra padding doesn’t really help that much, is also that these companies blast their logos all over these camera straps.

Call me crazy, but I don’t want to pay money and advertise for other people. If I’m going to pay money, I should get to advertise my own thing. I don’t want their logos all over my equipment. Besides, if I’m spending more money on a padded strap, it had better take 95% or more of the pressure off my neck, which frankly, it just doesn’t.

Camera straps that hang around the neck on a single band are outdated. They are uncomfortable. They are not practical. They do not protect your equipment. They let your gear swing around and bang into anything as you move. And well, moving around is pretty important in your line of work. That’s why the single camera straps are out. What you really need is a harness.

Harnesses work well because you can get them to work with nearly any type of camera or binocular set, for that matter. They evenly distribute the weight over your shoulders, back and chest and take away the neck pain you used to get with your camera straps. They protect your gear by not allowing it to swing but are convenient to bring to eye level or even detach quickly for whatever reason. Indeed, a binocular camera harness is definitely the new camera straps sensation.

Have you purchased and used a Lowepro Voyager C camera strap. What is it like and should I purchase one.?

The are 4 models of this camera strap and the Voyager C model appears to be the most comfortable to take my Nikon D200 camera. Would like to hear from anyone in the world that actually has used one, happy or not... Thanks a lot.

Whether you should purchase one I can't say, that's up to you.

However, I am using one and have been for a few months now and it just happens to also be supporting a D200. I use the camera constantly so it's had a hell of a lot of use over this period.

I disagree with the previous response, sure a leather strap is solid and won't drop your camera unexpectedly and a steel half inch chain would do an ever better job, but having perpetual sores around your neck from carrying several pounds of gear I do not believe is a mark of a professional either. If you're going to take outstanding pictures you need to be relaxed and comfortable. Causing yourself unnecessary pain and discomfort does not lead to good pictures.

Ok, what do I think of the strap? Comfort wise it's amazing. I sometimes carry five pounds around my neck for hours and come away from the experience without being sore.

Strength wise obviously it's not a leather strap but then I'm not carrying a hundred pounds either. I find the strap far stronger and more secure that it needs to be. I never consider that it might ever fail nor do I believe it can.

That said though, I also have two complaints albeit minor ones. I'd rather prefer the strap to be a bit longer. I find the camera rests on my chest and I generally prefer it lower down.

And it's not sticky enough. Once in a while I prefer to just hang the camera from my shoulder but when I do I find the strap likes to slip off unless I hold it in place with my hand. I would have preferred a finish on one side that would firmly glue itself to my clothes.

However, I've gotten used to the length and once in a while find it handy to have the camera on my chest when reviewing images while standing up and since I rarely carry the camera on my shoulder I've also gotten used to holding it in place.

Overall I'd say it's a nice design and worth the money.
