Here are some more information for Canon Nikon:

The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC is truly an amazing lens. It compares well with professional lenses from the Nikon (Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8) and Canon (Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS) camp. I initially purchased the lens because I was attracted in its large aperture and light weight. This lens is available for Nikon and Canon mount. I used the Nikon mount and found it fantastic.
When I used it, I became aware of its other advantages as well. The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC is fast and has a wide aperture, as well as vibration compensation. The autofocus is accurate and fast. I was able to obtain sharp pictures even at high shutter speeds. Moreover, the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC is very light and easy to carry.
The image quality is absolutely excellent. In fact, as I was surprised to find during my Tamron 17-50mm VC review that the sharpness is better than that of the Nikon equivalent. The Tamron beat the Nikon both in lab and in field.
The best is yet to come - the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC costs only half that of the Nikon (and Canon) model. I find myself using the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC more often. However, I'm not selling my Nikon yet. I will still be using my Nikon in extreme weather conditions.
Yes, that is the only catch with the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC. I still don't trust it enough to use it in extreme weather conditions.
I recommend this lens for those who do not photograph in extreme weather conditions often.
For its price, you'll get tremendous value for money.
To learn more about the lens in great detail, visit my Tamron 17-50mm VC review.
If you're not using a Nikon or Canon DSLR, the non-VC version is also available. Learn more about it at Tamron 17-50mm review.
Canon Xsi - Best Value Under $1500
There is really no better deal out there under $1500, or at least below $1,000 ... within the canon / nikon alignment. After 7 months of use, I can say that this is an impressive camera. It has many features you get with the 50D. Unless you care about high definition video or care about being able to make some major cuts to your photos, your best best for the $ is the Canon XSi.
One thing to keep in mind is that the noise levels are amazing. A step down from this camera and you have way too much noise. The 50D is very similar noise levels. I shot at a club in 1600 iso, flash exposure without running in 1 / 2 second ... reduced noise level, are still of excellent quality .. even 1:1 crops.
Also a note on the buttons: If you are concerned about using the camera quickly and use (as opposed to a point and shoot) DO NOT buy any less than this! Any step down is missing the hardware buttons for direct access. Why buy a DSLR, only to change the settings menus? Sure it is still some buttons, but you can set your own custom menu to help deny the return.
The measurement is decent, you need to make sure they match point at a neutral object to get a good read. With the use of land in the measuring chamber in a ezybalance Lastolite Gray Card for a reading of the exposure (and then change the camera aperture priority, manual and inputing the settings read), the exposure is pretty good.
N IR assist light, so you must use an external flash with the flash off (assuming you do not want to use flash) to use its standards to focus assist light in the dark. The function to turn the flash off, while using the focus assist lamp, not in a lot of cameras - so be careful if this is something you are interested in.
The quality is great, the noise levels are large, the autofocus is pretty good, the measurement is good, LCD is amazing (!), No assist lamp IR
Well, I recommend you stop reading user reviews and go read some comments from professionals somewhere like dp review, photo-digital-and digital cameras Steve. These are the item most of the opinion that in fact professional esk comparisons.

Canon @ Nikon................?
Which do you prefer..
Canon 500D @ Nikon D90
I don't know how you expect to get a clear answer.
It is rare that someone owns two camera bodies by two different camera companies, even more rare to own the specific ones you mentioned.
The Canon 500D is an entry level body and the D90 is an advanced DSLR body.
You are just going to have to test both of them yourself at a camera store and take an SD card with you and test each camera at their highest and lowest ISO as well as when using the white balance that matches the light in the store as well as with it in the "auto white balance" mode.
Once you get home and are able to see the results on your large computer monitor, you will know which camera is better for your needs and expectations, not ours.
Take your time before you decide. Once you choose one, you will be married to that system for decades and the cost of changing to the other system will cost you nearly as much as a divorce. If unsure, go back and do more tests until you are convinced which system is best for you
