New Nikon D3000 - Nikon D3000 Takes on Canon Rebel XSi

A few years back, Canon was the first to release a sub-$1000 camera with the Rebel 300D. Nikon followed quickly with the Nikon D40, and subsequent releases of Canon and Nikon entry level DSLRs have been able to increase the technology and lower the prices of these highly regarded cameras with each new release. Both Canon and Nikon have had terrific track records in the area of user satisfaction.

So how has Nikon sweetened its pot with the new D3000? There have been some very significant improvements over the extremely popular D40 which has now been discontinued from production. There are also a few improvements over the D60, which is also getting older as camera years go. Here are a few of the improvements over the Nikon D60:

• LCD panel is improved from 2.7" to 3"
• Autofocus has been upped from 3 point recognition to 11 point recognition
• 3D AF processing
• Starting price is $599 (includes kit lens)

With respect to the Canon Rebel XSi the beginning price point is even lower for the Nikon than it is for the Canon, even though the Canon XSi price tag has been reduced since the release of the Rebel T1i with its newer processor and video capability. What are good settings to use when using a Digital Canon Rebel while shooting pictures indoors?

I'm trying to find a good setting to use while using my Canon Rebel while shooting pictures of my baby indoors. Most of my pictures look dark and they don't capture they color of his eyes. The picture makes his eyes look brown and they are dark blue green.

Is there a good setting to use for shooting pictures indoors?

There are a few ways for capturing pictures indoors:
1. Use the flash; however, this option might not be popular if it disturbes the baby or if you're trying to shoot discreetly

Aside from flash, there are 3 factors that affect how much light a camera gets:

2. Crank up the ISO setting on the camera. The Rebel has an ISO range of 100-1600 (in 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1600 increments). The higher the ISO though, the more "grainy" a picture looks at full-size. But, if you're only making small prints (4x6 or 5x7) or for the web, then it's fine.

3. Turn your camera mode to Aperture Priority (marked by the "Av" on the top dial) and set the aperture to the lowest it can go. The lowest depends on the type of lens you have on the Rebel at the time. Lowest aperture is probably 2.8 or 3.5 on most lenses.

Try a setting of ISO 400 + aperture (also called F-stop) of f/3.5 or f/2.8 if you can get that, and let the camera choose the Shutter Speed (in "Av mode" that's what happens).

Auto-white-balance should be good for color, but if it's not, then shoot the white-wall in the room, and then choose "custom white balance".
