Zoom lens for a Canon Rebel XT SLR Camera?

I need advise on what type of lens to purchase. I have a Canon Rebel XT camera. I want a lens that I can use to zoom in closer to the subject of the photo. As I have been searching, I see that there are telephoto, telephoto zoom, etc. I have no idea what to buy. I am not a professional photographer and can't afford to spend $500 on a lens. What would be best for the average amature?
