Problem with 4X5 Sheet Film?
I got a pack of 400 speed 4x5 Ilford black and white film along with a Crown Graphic a few days ago. Today, I loaded up a film pack with two negatives and used my DSLR as a spot meter. The correct exposure was f11 with a five second exposure. When I developed the film in D-76, fixed it, and hung it up to dry, the film was very hazy. That is, the bottom of the image was soft, but visible, and the top was very dark. The second negative was completely blank. The way I figure it, I either loaded the film in backwards. Or, the settings are not correct on the camera. My DSLR provided a spot on reading, while the Crown Graphic was not. Any suggestions on what caused this problem? Also, how do I know the film is emulsion side up? Thank you.
When you load the film into the sheet film holder the film notch should be in the lower left hand corner. Look at the film that didn't turn out. There is a notch. This notch needs to be be at the bottom in the lower left corner of the sheet film holder.
The hazy appearance sounds like insufficient fixing time. I usually fix my 4x5 film at least 6 minutes especially if its 400 speed. Without seeing the negative its hard to say.
Feel free to email if you have any other questions about 4x5. I have a Calumet 4x5 view camera I have been using quite a bit lately.
Edit - I've taken a photo to show how I lay out my film when loading.

I tend to think of film in vertical format with the notch to the bottom left vertically. The sheet of film below the holder shows the notch on the bottom of the right corner - that is the emulsion side.
I was also thinking about negative quality. A light leak could partially fog the film to produce the effect you mention. If it happens again then I would check the film holder or the camera itself. You may not have had the film holder completely in place. I've had this happen before with my camera.
