is an extension tube's purpose similar to that of a retrofocus lens design/attachment? are they the same?

allowing to decrease the focal length for closer shooting.. ?
well, i have yet to learn about reversing rings.. the photography book im currently reading ( PHOTOGRAPHY ; london, stone, upton) mentions both retrofuc lenses and extension tubes--in the FOCAL LENGTH section.
i'm just trying to differentiate the two.
