One way vision glass can be obtained by installing a high reflective window film. Reflective window tint is generally made from two sheets of polyester, which has been through a process that deposits a layer of very small particles of metal, usually, aluminum, silver or bronze. This creates a very thin metalized layer in between the polyester sheets, a clear adhesive and thin polyester backing liner is attached and on the other side a scratch resistant coating.

When this reflective window film is applied to glass it creates a one way mirror under the correct conditions. The most common reflective window film is a reflective silver window film, the darkest usually referred to as silver 20. This silver film gives a silver mirrored appearance; other colours can be combined such as grey, gold and bronze.

How does reflective film work?

When installed to glazing the window tint will reflect images. If you have one room which is dark and another that is very bright the film will allow you to see into the brighter room but from the other side you will just get a reflection of the room you are in. You will not be able to see into the darker room. This works as the film will reflect images, in the dark room there isn't much light to reflect back and as so the image it is reflecting is very dull, however in the other room it is very bright and so the images reflected are also very bright and defined, this makes it so that when in the darker room you can see the image of the other room.

Your eyes don't realize that you are looking at a reflection; it looks as if you are looking straight into the other room. Because of the way the film works it means the window tint has limitations, it is recommended to have at least a 4:1 light ratio to get a true one way mirror effect. When installing the reflective window film on external glazing the natural sun light will always be brighter than most artificial light stopping people from seeing into the property but allowing vision out, however at night time when the lights are on inside the effect will be reversed.

There isn't any way around this unfortunately, if you want to have privacy day and night you will need to alter the lighting conditions to get at least a 4:1 light ratio day and night or have a look at a privacy window film which will stop people seeing in and out.

Film Tanks & Reels

Learn about the working of photographic equipment such as film reels and film processing tanks.

Sifting through our favorite photo albums is like traveling back in time by going down memory lane and reliving those precious moments spent with our loved ones. But what keeps our memories from fading away? Of course the camera--one of the best human inventions of all times.

Quiet a lot of work is involved before we finally get to see our everlasting fond memories on paper.

Film Reel

Once the film roll is complete and ready to be developed, it is loaded/ spooled onto a film reel in a darkroom. This step involves extra carefulness as portions of the film might not get developed if it has been improperly loaded. A film reel actually looks like a picture on a reel that would rotate and the photographs would show up, one after the other, on a cinema screen like the way cinemas showed movies long time back or like the Hollywood old film reel pictures as depicted in today’s movies.

Basically film reels are used for holding the roll film firmly so that it can be properly developed once inside the film processing tank. The roll takes the form of a spiral so that the film surfaces do not touch and it is uniformly spaced to let the chemical flow freely and touch every part of the film. The reel should be dry as any sign of dampness makes loading difficult.

Film reels are available in either plastic or steel and also in varied sizes to accommodate different films. Steel reels are more durable while the plastic ones are easier to handle by amateur photographers.

Film Reel Brands

Companies such as Peterson, Kindermann etc manufacture film tanks and reels for developing films.

Paterson positions itself as a user-friendly brand by offering the auto-load reel with a smooth finish and a twin ball ratchet system that make film loading very simple.

The 35mm stainless steel reels manufactured by Kindermann are marketed as chemical resistant, easy to clean and unbreakable as they are made from strong chrome nickel steel. It also guarantees to prevent damage as the reel is designed in such a way that there is negligible contact between the film edge and the reel.

Film Processing Tanks

Once the film has been loaded onto the film reel, it is developed using a light tight container called a film processing tank. The photographic film has the tendency to get damaged if exposed to daylight while developing, but with a film processing tank it can be developed in a daylight setting hence these are also referred to as ‘daylight tanks’. The various chemicals required for developing the photographs can be poured inside through the opening in the tank’s lid.

Similar to film reels, the film processing tank comes with different tank varieties and reel sizes to cater to both 35mm and 120mm film. The varieties include stainless steel and plastic tanks. For beginners it is advisable to use plastic tanks as they are cheap and user-friendly. However when processing temperature needs to be controlled, only stainless tanks can be used. Moreover a steel tank can be used either wet or dry unlike plastic tank where the film sticks and gets ruined if the tank is wet.

The core steps for developing photographs are summarized in the following steps:

  1. Prepare all the necessary equipment (tools, chemicals etc);
  2. Spool the film onto the film reel in the dark;
  3. Transfer the reel to the film processing tank sealed by a cap (once safely packed inside, film can be easily developed in daylight without getting ruined);
  4. Pour the developer in the tank and start the agitation process till required;
  5. After agitation is complete, wash the film;
  6. Hang to dry in a dust-free area;
  7. Cut the dry film into strips for printing.

In order to search for film tanks and film reels on sale, photography magazines or websites maybe consulted.

What are the advantages of buying a manual film camera over a digital one?

I found some great, cheap cameras on ebay, but they aren't digital, and my mother won't let me buy one. She says that there is no reason to use a film camera instead of a digital camera anymore. Personally, I think that all of those extra options complicate the camera too much. Does anyone know any advantages of buying a film camera that I can use to reason with my mom?

1. It's much less expensive to "flesh out" your whole system. Going this route, I have been able to buy 6 camera bodies and lenses from 20mm through 300mm for the cost of a mid-range DSLR.

2. The cost of film and processing will tend to make you more contemplative. You will think about every exposure and composition. This makes you a much better photographer than just blindly shooting away as many digital photographers do.

3. Contrary to the "instant feedback" argument that many people espouse, negative film is much, much easier to learn on than digital. You can be way off on exposure and still get a perfectly useable image.

4. Film is better than ever. The latest pro films from Kodak and Fuji are amazing in terms of grain.

5. Buy pro quality film equipment, and it will never die with typical amateur use. Plus, film equipment doesn't become obsolete in a few years like digital equipment.

6. Eventually, move up to medium or even large format, and you'll be amazed at quality that tops any digital camera on the market.

Upcoming film sequels and remakes multiply daily
LOS ANGELES, April 30 — While film producer Jerry Weintraub confirmed there will not be an ‘Ocean’s 14’, it may be one of the only successful Hollywood film franchises without a new installment. The list of sequels continues to grow, with many in 3D in various states of writing, casting and choosing directors. James Cameron has confirmed there is an ‘Avatar 2’ and ‘3’ expected; no date has been ...
