What this system is equipped with:

The Lightning Strike Personal Protection System is comprised of two parts the Brite Strike tactical flashlight and a personal alarm. Let me give you a little back ground on Brite Strike. The Brite Strike brand of illumination products was designed by police officers for police officers; they were tired of using subpar equipment so they took the challenge to design and build a superior product that would stand up to the rigors of day to day use. During extreme moments your equipment can't fail you and for that reason they developed the Brite Strike tactical flash light products. This particular system comes with a training booklet to show you how to properly use the products for self defense.

Brite Strike Flash light:

The Flash lights body is constructed from high quality aluminum from top to bottom to assure its durability while the polycarbonate lens is strong enough to withstand the rigors of everyday usage. The built in striking crown at the lighted end is for self defense maneuvers to fight off attackers. The switch is located at the back of the light and is constructed of high quality rubber so it's easy on the fingers and the way the body is designed, even women with long nails can operate it without worrying about breaking them. It comes with a wrist strap and carrying case you can clip on your belt, pants, or purse.

This unit measures four inches in length, approximately one inch in diameter and is very light weight. Don't let its little size fool you, with a one finger move you can turn on this powerful 65 lumen light; a second push of the button drops this unit down to the low beam of 20 lumens, depress the button again and you get an incredibly annoying strobe from 65 lumens to 20 lumens that can blind attackers temporally giving you the opportunity to flee. 

Personal Alarm:

The personal alarm is small, compact, and durable measuring only 1 ¾" long 1" wide and ½" thick allowing you to carry it with you at all times. When the pin is pulled it roars to life with a 100 decibel scream that is equivalent to a jet plane take off at 500 meters or a train at 30 meters. It comes with a lanyard on one end and a key chain on the other.

Advantage and Disadvantage:

One advantage to this system is having both the flash light and personal alarm in combination, it is a really powerful force against someone following you close up or at a short distance and even from an attack. How, by using the strobe setting on the flash light to blind them and the personal alarm to scare them off and alert others to your situation. If attacked by using the striking crown of the flash light to remove their grip on you and the alarm to scare them and to notify others of your situation. Another advantage is the training booklet it comes with that can illustrate and teach you the proper techniques to make this unit affective for you.

One disadvantage is proper training is a must. However that is true of any personal security and self defense device. Another thing to think about is the personal alarm though loud is only 100 decibels, is that loud enough in a noise environment to raise awareness.

Why do they call it a gun SHOW?

Why do they call it a GUN SHOW?

This is my rant after "people watching" at a Gun & Knife Show. We had rented a table to display and sell our self defense products. We were the only vender selling Non Lethal self defense products. Now, don't get me wrong, I am a firm believer in the Right to Bear Arms and I hold a CCF license. But, as I have stated in past articles, sometimes it is just not always practical to wear a handgun. Well, the show was very crowded. There were personnel at the door checking all guns to make positive that NO guns were loaded and all boxes of ammo were sealed. Each and every gun entering the building or displayed by a vender had to be secured with a bright orange security strap that prevented the action from working or the gun from being loaded.

The venders were under strict zero tolerance policy. If a gun was accidentally discharged, that vender would be removed and banned from any future gun shows. As for people watching, it amazed me how many men wore their guns as if they were ready for a fight, yet the guns were unloaded and secured with the orange strap. Some guys wore western style holsters with their six shooters in low ride ready for quick draw. I saw one guy with two colt 45 1911's in the back of his belt, and another one carried in the cross draw position in front.

Now if I was going to bring a gun or gun to a show like this, to sell, I would carry them in some kind of bag or gun case. But then maybe that's why the call it a Gun Show! The number one joke of the day was as follows. A man would be looking at my non lethal Stun Guns. I would recommend they get one for their wife. Nine out of ten guys would say, " No way would I buy something like that for my wife, she would use it on me!"

 Seriously, most men would either say, they were there to get a gun for their wife or they would say their wife already had a gun. At that point I would comment, where are they going to keep the gun? How is she going to carry it? This is when I usually got a puzzled look from the man. The most common remark would then be, "in her purse".

When I showed the women the stun guns, most would be amazed how small and easy to carry the non lethal weapons actually were! A few women told me they carried a gun in their purse. Carrying a gun in your purse is dangerous! A gun in a women's purse is most likely going to be very hard to get to if they are attacked. It is more likely going to end up being taken by the bad guy. A gun that ends up in the bottom of a purse, covered up by tons of stuff most women carry, just will not be available and ready in a high stress situation.

Yes, there are specially designed women's purses which are designed to allow quick and easy access of a gun, but none of the women I talked to had one. One lady patted her purse with her hand and said, "I keep my 9mm right here." I noted that the purse was very large. It had a large flap over the top and was secured with two straps that looked like buckles, but were probably snaps. I cautiously mentioned to her,

"If someone was to grab you from behind, as most attackers do, how would you ever get to your gun in time?"

 She defended herself by saying, "Oh, I would get it in time and use it if needed."

 It is my own opinion and experience that a concealed weapon is not a quick draw weapon. The more it is concealed, the harder it is going to be to get to it in a hurry. This is where the non lethal weapons such as a pepper spray or stun gun can be so valuable. Today's non lethal self defense weapons are small, and easy to carry right in your hand. They are easy to learn how to use and are quickly brought to bear on an attacker. They can solve the "problem" and provide you time to escape or even "buy" time, disabling the attacker and allowing you to then access your firearm if it is still needed.

A non lethal weapon such as a stun gun which is disguised as a flash light or cell phone is so easy to carry right in your hand as you walk to your car after work or leaving the mall. This is when you will be most vulnerable, at night, walking alone in a parking lot.

Every single mugging, I investigated as a deputy sheriff in Southwest Florida, was in a parking lot. Parking garages also provide a target rich environment for the bad guys. Most purse snatchings, I worked, occurred in the daytime. Carrying a handgun open and ready at times like this is a great way to defend yourself, BUT NOT very practicable. It may even get you in trouble, if not with the police, it will definitely draw attention from bystanders.

A stun gun flash light or cell phone, will go totally unnoticed, unless and until you really need it. Don't be like the guys at the gun show. You can't really show off your self defense weapon in public, whether its a firearm or a non lethal defense weapon.

Are flash straps uncomfortable for the horse?

My young horse has a flash strap attached to his noseband, as he has a tendency to open his mouth / try and avoid the bit otherwise.
But I heard that they can be uncomfortable and too restrictive. is this true? I want to know b/c if it is then I will stop using it

young horses will frequently open their mouth when they are still green broke.. its pretty common and most of them outgrow it as they get the idea.. its more uncomfortable for a horse to go around with his mouth open than it is for a horse to go around with his mouth closed... if a horse continues to open his mouth to evade the bit you need to look at the bit/bridle, physical problems, or the rider/training..as i said, its more uncomfortable for the horse to keep his mouth open than the mouth closed, so if he persists in doing it then there is another problem going on...

a lot of people think that a flash noseband doesnt hurt the horse, and technically, a correctly fitted one will not hurt, but in the process of restricting the horse's ability to open its mouth, it also restricts the ability of the horse to slide his lower jaw back, which is actually necessary for the horse to properly loosen up his topline and move freely and softly.. you can still get the horse to move well, but there will be an inherent stiffness in the horse's jaw as a result of his inability to move his jaw back as nature designs when the horse stretches his topline and becomes rounded...

there was a time when i used a flash noseband for training horses, and they all did good, but when i learned about how it restricts the natural movement of the jaw i stopped using one and my horses did just as good if not better, and i never had any problems and never needed to even think about using one to deal with a problem, even with the young/green horses...
