About the Author
How do you know that a lens will work with your large format camera?
Is there a way of knowing what lenses work with something like a 4x5 or 8x10 or larger camera?
If you have a 2.25"x3.25" camera will the lens work on an 8x10 camera?
So you don't have a 250mm lens that's just meant for 4x5 and a 250mm lens that meant for up to 8x10?
If I could give two or three thumbs up to one answerer I would.
Ideally the image circle of your lens should at the least cover the long side of your sheet film without vignetting or other appreciable light loss.
If you wish to have movements it should cover more than that.

Addendum:
For all practical extensions a medium format lens will not cover a 4x5" sheet of film. I can't image a situation where it could cover an 8x10" sheet of film.
Your medium format lens will work with a large format camera but the image will appear as a circle on the sheet film. It is kind of a neat effect.

Addendum II
It depends on the formula of the lens, intended use, the maximum aperture and other variables. Some large format lenses were designed to be optimized for a certain format and others not.
It can be pretty confusing so I use this chart:
