Critically hailed as an instant classic, Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima is a masterwork of uncommon humanity and a harrowing, unforgettable indictment of the horrors of war. In an unprecedented demonstration of worldly citizenship, Eastwood (from a spare, tightly focused screenplay by first-time screenwriter Iris Yamashita) has crafted a truly Japanese film, with Japanese dialogue (with subtitles) and filmed in a contemplative Japanese style, serving as both complement and counterpoint to Eastwood's previously released companion film Flags of Our Fathers... |

What is Digital Printing?
Digital printing is a modern printing technique that produces prints directly from a computer file rather than a slide or a photograph, without going through some intermediate medium such as a film negative, a colour proof or a plate. Digital printing is used for many commercial printing needs in both black and white and full colour. Some specialist commercial digital printing companies can also offer:
• large format printing such as posters, signage, canvas and acrylic prints
• extra wide printing for large scale external applications such as banners, advertising billboards, hoardings and building wraps.
Today digital printing is being increasingly used in place of older forms of printing such as litho. It is easy to understand why when you look at the many advantages digital printing offers:
Advantages of digital printing
Digital printing has many advantages, the main ones being faster turnaround and lower production cost. It is often used for on-demand or short-run colour printing. It is very cost-effective on short print runs owing to the low set up costs and the fact that there are no minimum volume restrictions. Other advantages include:
• Choice of processes some of which can be used for high definition printing applications
• Printing can be done on many different substrates
• Waterproof and fade resistant inks can be used
• Suitable for printing materials for interior or outdoor use
• Any size can be printed including large format and extra wide format
Digital printing processes
There are various processes which can be used for digital printing, the choice of which is determined by the application and intended use. Among them are:
INKJET PRINTING produces photo-realistic graphics with brilliant colour intensity. Its versatility makes it a good choice for large format display graphics. Inkjet printers use CMYK inks to produce full colour and can print onto a wide range of media so this process is suitable for both indoor use and outdoor use.
UV PRINTING is a high quality and cost effective large format full colour printing process. The process uses environmentally friendly UV inks which are cured with UV light, making it very resistant to fading, water resistant and abrasion. It is ideally suited for outdoor graphics as it can cope with all weather conditions. There are two types of UV full colour printing:
• roll fed - where graphics are printed onto a roll of media such as PVC or fabric
• Flatbed - printed directly to rigid or flexible, flat surfaced substrates, often PVC Foamex boards or ACM (aluminium composite material).
LAMBDA PRINTING uses laser technology to produces the highest resolution display graphics for top quality photographic prints on photographic paper, film or Duratrans. It is ideally suited for large format display graphics as it gives sharp photographic images, continuous tone and high-impact colour prints.
Wide range of substrates
Digital printing produces very high definition images on a wide range of materials of different thicknesses, weights and finishes including photo paper, vinyl, film, mesh, canvas, and various textiles. Digital flatbed printers can also print directly onto most flat surfaced rigid or flexible substrates including: PVC Foamex, ACM (aluminium composite material), acrylic, corrugated board, polycarbonate, polyboard and card.
Digital printing applications
• Banners - often used for outdoor advertising and event signage. Usually printed on vinyl which is the least expensive using for weather resistant inks.
• Posters - widely used in trade shows and the retail sector as very cost effective way to promote a company, product or service. Can be printed on matte, satin or gloss paper in various sizes.
• Photos -can be printed on paper, fabrics and rigid materials such as poster board or foam core.
• Canvas Print -look almost as good as an original and can be used to reproduce top quality fine art or photographs. Available on standard canvas or artist canvas material and can be mounted on wood frames.
• Signage - depending on whether it's meant for interior or outdoor use, it's printed on vinyl papers, translucent materials, fabrics as well as rigid materials such as poster board or foam core.
• Mesh Printing - Used mainly for stage backdrops and on buildings, mesh is a lightweight perforated fabric that is resistant to tearing and very strong, ideal for large exterior banners. Mesh material is flame retardant and directly printable using UV and solvent inks.

History of Computer Graphics
The field of computer graphics has developed alongside the development of the digital computer. In 1959, MIT's Lincoln Labs TX-2 computer gave birth to the field of interactive computer graphics. By the mid 1960's major corporations, such as TRW, Lockheed, General Electric and Sperry Rand, had already started research and development in computer graphics. IBM's 2250 graphics terminal was the first commercially available graphics computer.
In 1969, the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) initiated a Special Interest Group on Graphics and Interactive Techniques (SIGGRAPH) to promote the generation and dissemination of information on computer graphics and interactive techniques. SIGGRAPH interests include simulation and modeling, computer generated art, digital motion analysis, text editing and composition, cartography and mapping, computer aided design, and computer graphics software and hardware.
During the 1970s, personal computers became more powerful, and were more capable of drawing complex shapes and designs.
In the late 1980s, 3D computer graphics, such as 3D models, became possible with the SGI computers and graphical user interfaces (GUI). GUI presented data (input and output) and information with symbols, icons and images, rather than text. The SGI computers were used to create some of the first fully computer-generated short films at Pixar. Today, Apple's Macintosh system remains one of the most popular choices for computer graphics in graphic design studios and businesses.
In the 1990’s, 3D image renderings became the main advances in the computer graphics industry and it stimulated cinematic graphics applications. VGA and SVGA standards were introduced and since then, personal computers could easily display photo-realistic images and movies.
Since then, computer graphics have become more realistic, due to more advanced computers, 3D techniques, and better 3D modeling software and applications. With the rising popularity of games, multimedia, and animation, 3D graphics have become more popular.
In 1996, one of the first fully 3D games, Quake, was released. In 1995, Toy Story, the first full-length computer-generated animation film, was released. In 2001, powerful computer hardware graphics GeForce series by NVIDIA's was released. In 2003 ID Software graphics engine was released in Doom3 game.
Computer Graphics are widely used today. From graphics presentations to virtual reality worlds and entertainment, computer graphics have a far reaching impact of our everyday lives.

How did the graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns influence the film?
I am writing an essay and I need to know how the graphic novel influenced the movie visually and conceptually. If you could help me out it would be much appreciated!
In all honesty, the stories are nothing alike. The Dark Knight Returns is about an older Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement as Batman in a world that is deeply sinking into crime and smut.
Visually, they are pretty separate as well. Although they both retain a dark and gritty feel, the comic is definitely "dirtier" feeling. The movie is a lot more clean and polished.
However, they are similar in their dark tone. They take place in a world that is not perfect with heroes that are not perfect and endings that are not particularly happy ones. I'd say that the film would not exist if not for the comic.
