The Hasselblad CW (also known as the Hasselblad 503CW) is a part of the V-system of cameras and was developed by Viktor Hasselblad as a flexible camera system. The bodies, lenses, viewfinders, winders, film magazines, holders and other accessories are all meant to be interchangeable.

The name "V-System" wasn't really used until the "H-System" was developed. Using the name "V-System" is an easy way to note the older product line. (The H-system is digital-based.)

And now, here are 5 reasons to love the Hasselblad CW:

  1. As mentioned, this is a flexible system. All parts and pieces from the V-System are meant to work together. That means that your photography is more flexible too.
  2. The 503CW has the ability to use a motorized winder (the CW Winder). This gives a film advanced rate of 0.8 frames per second.
  3. While the CW Winder adds a lot of size and heft to the setup, it's quite pleasurable and easy to use handheld.
  4. The Hasselblad CW uses through-the-lens (TTL) metering, making things extremely easy for those who use flash often.
  5. One review I read quoted it to be "the perfect camera."

If you decide to go with a Hasselblad CW, you are going to get outstanding photos. In fact, in another review that I read, the reviewer mentioned that between the 503CW and another camera that he owns, the Hassy's photos stand out every time. Now, part of that reason is the quality of the Hasselblad camera body. And the other part is due to the superb Carl Zeiss optics.

Yes, Hasselblad cameras are very expensive, but from what I've read, I haven't found someone who said it wasn't worth it. If you're a professional photographer, you need to have professional tools.

If you're still having trouble deciding, I would recommend a Google search for "503CW reviews". You can also go to my Hasselblad CW page to help you decide if this is the right tool for your business. http://www.squidoo.com/hasselblad-cw

Lifestyle Portraits. Is it anything new?

I've been a photographer for a long time now, 30 years to be exact. Although www.incadoo.co.uk is a more recent step. Throughout these years of image taking I have seen trends come and go. None more so than the art of Portrait Photography. In the late eighties we were all taking the lead from the Americans with dark warm toned painted backgrounds, multi lit subjects with modelling lights, fill lights, kicker and background lights. It was all rather technical, but everyone was doing it and it was the norm for that era. Some of us though liked a bit of a challenge by taking our cameras outdoors.

Some photographers had no choice if they couldn't afford a studio. Anyway, off I went with my trusty Hasselblad and 150mm lens and took what turned out to be soft, warm and very saleable outdoor portraits. Using the great outdoors was liberating. The extra space, the changing light and seasons, don't get me wrong, getting a controlled outdoor portrait is more of a challenge than you'd think. All those things that make an outdoor portrait wonderful also add to the difficulties. You need to understand natural light much more, regard your backgrounds and utilising a much reduced depth of field too. All makes for a more technical approach. The nineties heralded the rise of the "Hi-Key" Studio Portrait.

The dark tones of the painted canvas backdrops were rolled up and put away. Bright breezy and fun portraits became the order of the day, and they still seem to take precedence but, there is something out there that is really switching people on to portraiture again. The Outdoor Portrait is back, now called "Lifestyle Portraits" These portraits might seem something new to some. To us Professional Photographers, and me in particular, they are a welcome return to what separates professionals from the amateurs. If you click onto our site at www.incadoo.co.uk to look at our portraits there, or better still click on http://www.incadoo.co.uk/portraiture_photographer_cheshire_manchester_staffordshire.php because this will take you straight there, you'll see the style and relaxed feel these kind of portraits convey.

For the customer it can give a truly personal one off portrait. Better still if taken around the customer's own home. The problem with the Hi-Key studio portrait is that it feels like a mass produced item. And I'm sure some customers are still smarting from the hard sales pitch associated with some of the franchised companies. I'm glad the outdoor portrait is coming back. It's good for photographers and our customers.

What is the best professional photography lab on the west coast (closer to Arizona)?

Old professional film photographer here. I used to shoot portraits and weddings on my Hasselblad back in the day. I'm just now returning to the photography scene with my first digital SLR. I wanted to know what is the best professional lab to send in my digital photos online. I'm located in Arizona, so I would like to narrow it down to someone on the west coast for shipping and time's sake.

I'm very new to this, so I'll gladly provide any additional information. Please let me know.
And any additional advice would be appreciated! Thank you.

Try the Icon in Los Angeles. They're a full-service lab (conventional and digital) so they're used to working with photographers who have a film background, and work with photographers around the world, so they can definitely handle the shipping part.
