Are you looking for a 55-inch LCD HDTV from Toshiba? If so, you might want to consider either the Toshiba Regza 55SV670U or the Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U, two of Toshiba's largest LCD models, which, though similar in some ways, have several key differences.
The main difference between the Toshiba Regza 55SV670U and the Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U is the type of lighting they use. While both are LCD HDTVs, the 55SV670U uses LED lighting with local dimming while the 55ZV650U uses a fluorescent lamp like most LCD sets. Because of this, the 55SV670U is more energy efficient, longer-lasting and has a brighter screen.
Furthermore, the LED ligting of the 55SV670U allows it to create very deep black levels - an area in which the 55ZV650U falls short. This is because the backlight of the 55SV670U can be completely turned off in dark areas while the backlight of the 55ZV650U can only be dimmed to a dark grey at most. The rest of the colors appear rich and accurate on both screens.
The other key difference between both models is their processing. While the 55SV670U has a 240Hz refresh rate, the 55ZV650U merely has its effect, which, though deceivingly similar, is not the same thing. Indeed, the latter actually has a refresh rate of just 120Hz, but is increased by an advanced backlight scanning technology to create the same effect of a 240Hz refresh rate. Still, it can display only a maximum of 800 lines during fast-moving scenes, which, though an improvement compared to many LCDs, remains below the 900 to 1000 lines displayed by true 240Hz models like the 55SV670U.
In other aspects, they are more or less the same. In fact, they are difficult to tell apart at first glance since both sport the same silver-accented glossy black bezel gilded by a metallic border. Take a closer look, however and you will notice the transparent coating of the 55SV670U, making it appear like it is fashioned from a single sheet of glass.
Both also have the same extensive picture settings - one of their strong points. These include five adjustable picture modes that are independent per input, five aspect ratio selections, a Control Visualization Window full color temperature controls that previous Toshiba models don't have and an anti-blurring mechanism that can be enabled separately from the dejudder processing.
Connectivity is another strong point of either the Toshiba Regza 55SV670U or the 55ZV650U, highlighted by four HDMI inputs - three at the rear panel and one at the side, a PC input, two component video inputs and both a USB port and an SD card slot so you can easily share your photos, videos and music files from a number of devices. Various digital and analog audio connections are also provided. Unfortunately, an ethernet port is not, which means you will also be missing out on the interactive features many other HDTVs provide.
Clearly, the Toshiba Regza 55SV670U is the better HDTV, with better picture quality at only about $500 or so more. Still, the 55ZV650U is not half bad and can still be a great choice for those who want an affordable HDTV that delivers good motion resolution for an LCD set.

The Latest LCD TV Technology
The most popular HDTVs today are LCD TVs, which are far outselling Plasma TVs. LCD TVs use less electricity and are lighter than Plasma TVs. Plasma TVs have some advantages, such as high contrast ratios, viewing angles, and are suitable for fast moving action. Over the years, the LCD TVs refresh rate has narrowed the gap with Plasma TVs, and contrast ratios have vastly improved. LCD TVs are brighter and better suited to well lit rooms. A new type of LCD TV is sometimes called an LED TV.
LCD Backlights - There are three types of backlights for LCD TVs. The backlight is located in the back of the TV and illuminates the screen. The backlight can effect the colors, contrast, and brightness of your TV.
[1] Fluorescent Backlight - The most common backlight is a fluorescent backlit screen (using the same technology as the fluorescent light bulbs in most kitchens). These are in most LCD TVs. These backlights can give outstanding images and contrast in top rated sets. Some manufacturers of high end sets have fluorescent backlights that can give you enhanced colors compared to regular ones.
[2] Edge Lit LED Backlight - LED backlights use LED lights (light emitting diodes) which use the same type of technology as the keychain LED lights, only more advanced and powerful. Edge lit lights the back of the set similarly to how fluorescent bulbs do (illuminating the entire backlight at all times). More expensive than fluorescent. You gain more contrast, colors, and energy savings up to 40% over conventional backlights.
[3] Local Dimming LED Backlight - This is the latest backlight technology. Local Dimming puts LED lights directly behind your LCD screen, where they can dim or turn off for the best contrast available. These are more expensive than edge lit, but can offer greater contrast and better picture. Both types of LED TVs are very thin (as thin as 1.2 inches) and suitable for mounting on a wall. As prices come down, LED will become the dominant backlight for HDTVs.
AntiBlur Technology - The other major LCD technology is called antiblur technology. The technology is called 120Hz and 240Hz. Most HDTVs sold up to this point have been 60Hz models. Hz stands for Hertz (which refers to cycles per second). By speeding up the Hertz rate, These TVs can insert more frames into the picture, which can reduce blur that can occur on LCD TVs. This is great for action movies and sports. This can also improve the viewing of motion picture films that were filmed at 24 frames per second by reducing judder (TVs display at a higher framerate than film).
Another type of technology for LCD is 1080p. The term 1080p signifies the full resolution possible today in high definition (2 million pixels at 1920x1080 resolution). Most sets sold up to this point were 720p which is half the resolution of 1080p (1 million pixels). Most small sets use this resolution since it would be hard to tell the difference on such a small set. Today, most sets sold are 1080p sets which are also the full resolution of Blu-ray discs.
The most popular brand of LCD TV is Samsung. This is followed by Sony, LG, and Sharp. We have found that picking a brand name TV instead of a no-name or second tier brand may be the best bet. Name brand TVs have better warranties, generally have better image processors (which helps to upconvert standard definition programs), and better contrast and quality control.
Whatever TV you choose, read the consumer reviews of these sets and determine what size would be suitable for your needs.

Vizio LCD backlight setting?
I purchased a Vizio 42 inch LCD after owning a DLP for the last 7 years (i gave up on it because of its short bulb lifespan), so i wanted to ask about this Vizio lifespan.
First of all the brightness is set to 50 and the Backlight is to 90 (this seems to be default as i have not changed anything).
So i wanted to know does the lifespan of the tv decrease significantly because the backlight is set to 90? it will be used mainly for blue-ray and gaming (if that makes any difference)
I just wanted to know because i already had a difficult time with the DLP that i had.
Actually, even if you modify the back light setting it won't technically really affect the life span of your set. Lowering it down basically decreases the amount of power your set is using. LCD's usually last longer that rear projections. (But comparing the quality, i would say DLP's still have one of the best picture quality's out there).
