What would be a good multi-purpose lens for Nikon D80?

I am planning to get the Nikon D80.
Should I get it with just the body or with the kit lens?
Is the kit lens any good?
I plan to use it mostly urban lights at night and portraits. What would be a suitable/cheap(er) lens for that?

I am of a like mind to fhotoace. An 18-200mm or similar will give you moderate wide-angle through to medium telephoto. This will give you a wide range of capabilities - landscapes and architecture at one end, portraiture in the mid range and give you reasonable performance for wildlife at the telephoto end.

From what you indicate you want to do, you might consider something like the 18-135mm or even the 18-85mm. These will still give you good options for portraiture and architectures, as well as moderate telephoto performance.
