Why does a longer focal length lens give less DOF than a short focal length lens set at the same f-stop?

I seem to be having a hard time putting this idea into my head, in practice -- I know what to do-- but the actual idea of it eludes me, I just don't understand WHY, if a picture is taken at the same f/stop and the SAME DISTANCE why it would have a difference in DOF. Can anyone explain it to me, I haven't found any information anywhere that tells why it does this, just that it does. Am I totally missing something that's real easy? Thanks to anyone that takes the time to answer.
again its more the idea, not the practice- From the classes I've taken I've learned how to control DOF pretty well, and i've learned to accept -- yes there is a difference-- i just want to be able to explain it, sometimes there are things I just want to know even if it doesn't really make any difference. Its the idea thats killing me.
Is it because of the distance of the lens to the film when it collects light and refracts or bends light rays to converge at a point onto a focal plane?
