anyone know a lens that can focus very close to the subject?

does anyone know of a lens, preferably prime, that can focus very close to the subject (for the Nikon F mount) ? it doesn't necessarily have to be a macro lens, just have close-focus capabilities.
the lens with the closest focusing that i can find is the Nikon 18-55mm II, which can focus 11.5cm from the front of the lens.
does anyone know of any that can focus closer?

i know of several compact cameras that have a 1cm macro mode... why is it that compact cameras can focus that close but interchangeable lenses can't?

The ability to close focus is the reason behind Macro lenses. Its not the only way, look into bellows and extension tubes which do the same job.

A Macro lens is a standard lens with the extension tube built in.

The reason compacts can focus closer is because, due to the tiny sensor, they need to to get the same degree of magnification.

To give you some idea a 50mm lens on an APS sized sensor will give about 4 times life size with a set of bellows at maximum extension. The lens would be within an inch of the subject. This makes it difficult as your in your own light, so photographers tend to use a 135mm lens which will get exactly the same frame and magnification, but from further away (about 4 inches), due to the inverse square law a 500mm lens would get exactly the same shot from about 6ft away!
