Can you ever use old SLR (not auto focus) lenses on an auto focus SLR?

I have some old Minolta mount lenses from an X-700 camera. Can I use them on the new Sony Alpha DSLR? They have an adapter I am told for the old Minolta mounts but my lenses are not auto focus. Not sure if I can use them.

If you get an adapter you can, although you will have to focus by hand.

Adapters are usually expensive. You'd probably be better off getting a lens for the Sony!
