What is the best type of photography camera?

So Im a beginner in the whole photography world. I keep hearing the Nikon d40 is a good chose but im not sure yet. Please help (:

Depends on where you want to go. I assume you are only considering digital cameras.
For snapshots, a $100-$150 camera is a great buy. For $150-200, the 10-12X "superzoom" cameras give you more flexibility at the cost of no longer being a "pocket camera". If you want the best quality and convenience is not an object, then a DSLR will give you the best pictures possible and be able to capture shots that the simpler cameras cannot. The D40 and D60 are great cameras with a high price tag.
Things to consider:
The Nikon's and Canons do not have in camera image stabilization, the image stabilization is in lenses marked and priced accordingly ($$$).
Sony and Olympus have their image stabilizations in the body which make the lenses less expensive, but for top performance, image stabilization tailored for a specific lens will be slightly better.

DSLR's are bulky and you will probably need a decent sized gadget bag to carry along when going on a trip. It will need to be at least large enough for the camera with one lens attached, an external flash (another $200-$400, but much less for a cheap ebay knock-off) and probably another lens (because the standard kit lens gives you about the same range as a 3x point and shoot).
