I bought a treeless saddle, but have a question about a pad?

I got it at a steal on ebay for $58. Great saddle, very comfy, and fits my horse perfect (finally! I have one of those impossible to fit horses) Anyways I read more after I had won it and found out you need a special pad. My question is, is the special pad really necessary? Do I have any other options? More along the range of affordable pads *college student, living on my own*

Before I got to college I use to run barrels and team rope in High School all the time and treeless saddles came in handy for my barrel horses so I know where you are coming from.

Although treeless saddle pads are recommended, from my personal experience I do not think there is any difference. We always had the best luck with those thick, grey felt pads; they last a long time and seem to conform to the saddle the best.
