Depending on what you are looking for, you can find a decent, affordable digital camera for under $200.  One of the better options in this price range is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS15. 

Weighing in at just under five ounces, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS15 is a compact, lightweight 12-megapixel digital camera with 5x optical zoom and a 2.7-inch LCD screen.  It features both optical and digital image stabilization, runs on a rechargeable lithium ion battery that lasts up to 330 shots, and offers SD/SDHC or MultiMedia card storage.  It is available in blue, black, or silver. 

The Panasonic Lumix provides simple, easy-to-use direct controls.  The Lumix includes an Intelligent Auto mode that is great for beginning photographers.  In fact, it offers a wide range of automatic shooting options, including 26 scene modes with both standard and artistic options. 

The Panasonic Lumix offers only VGA quality video capture, and the optical zoom cannot be used while recording video.  It offers decent photo quality, but there is visible noise and distortion at all ISO levels, which range from 80 to 1600.  The wide-angle lens also presents some barrel distortion.  Startup time and shutter lag are unimpressive for the Lumix: they are average for this class of cameras. 

Overall, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS15 is a good choice for simple design, standard features, and affordable price.  However, because both performance and photo quality were inconsistent, those looking for a more solid choice in digital cameras might seek other similar options in this price range and class.

Will I get the same range with an 18-55mm lens on my Nikon D80 as on my Panasonic DMC-LX1?

Up till now I have been using my D80 for wildlife photography and the occasional mountain expedition, and using my Panasonic for tourism because it has a wide enough angle to capture large monuments. I want to start using my DSLR for tourism though, but I need to get a proper wide angle lens. Will I get the same wide angle on an 18-55mm lens as on the Panasonic?

If it helps, the Panasonic's wide aspect 35mm equivalent is 28mm.

If you panasonic's wide side is 35mm equivalent of 28mm, then you'll get the same wide angle coverage on 18-55 lens with your Nikon as that on your Panasonic, in fact, just a tad wider, plus much better overall picture quality that you get with an SLR.

Nikon has 1.5x magnification factor, meaning that to get it's 35mm equivalent coverage you need to multiply actual focal length by 1.5.. Hence 18mm at wide angle is 27mm equivalent. So use your Nikon with confidence!
