There must be some reason why some people have a crystal clear pool all year round and you seem to have nothing but trouble from your swimming pool. In fact I've seen identical pools side by side and one neighbor always has a perfect pool that is always in perfect condition and the other pool just looks like a mess and the owners are just about ready to fill it in!

If your that person that always seems to have to have nothing but problems with their pool this article will be a life saver for you! Seriously! Read this from top to bottom and even print this out because it will help you and your pool in more ways than you can imagine!

Lets get started shall we...

Step 1:

Turn the pump on!

Step 2:

Vacuum the bottom of the pool, scoop out any leaves and brush the walls and floor.

Step 3:

Clean out the skimmer basket and the pump basket.

Step 4:

Clean the filter.

Step 5:

If you have a salt pool check the cell, if it looks gunked up clean it by soaking it in a mix of muriatic acid and water. I use a 5 parts water to 1 part acid. Just let it sit in the liquid till its clean.

Now that your pool is clean you need to test the water to see if the water is balanced! Just because your pool is clean does not mean that it is now perfect and ready to swim in! So here comes the testing part! I highly recommend not using test strips as they are not accurate! Try to use a test kit that uses drops or tablets.

Step 6:

Test the chlorine...It should be between 2.0 - 4.0 If your test says that its low add chlorine as necessary and turn your salt chlorinator up if you have a salt pool. If it's high you will just have to wait a few days for it to come down. If you have a salt pool turn the salt chlorinator down.

Step 7:

Test your PH...it should be between 7.2 - 7.8 If your PH is low you need to add soda ash. If it is high you need to add muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate to bring it down.

Step 8:

Test the Total alkalinity...you should have this between 80 - 150. If its low add sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and if it's high you can add muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate to bring it down.

Step 9:

Test your calcium hardness...this should be between 200 - 400. Add calcium carbonate to increase it and add sodium hexametaphosphate to lower it!

Step 10:

Test your salt levels...if you have a salt pool. The levels should be around 4000 - 5000ppm. Add salt if needed.

Don't mix chemicals and make sure you take care when using them! You have to make sure that you dilute these chemicals in a non metal bucket before your put them into the pool. Always add the chemical to water and not water to the chemical.

This may seem like a lot of work! But you need to do this twice a week to make sure that your pool is always in tip top condition. Always have the pool clean and test the water twice a week...you may not even have to add anything to the water, but it is better to be safe than sorry. You don't want a green pool do you?
