Photo mugs are a great craft for any age and they make great keepsakes. There are two simple ways to make a photo mug. Option 1 is to do it yourself. Option 2 is to order from a photo printing company. Let's take a look at the first option-

Do It Yourself

Before you begin, make sure you have each of these items:

  • Mug - White is the most commonly used color, but you can also choose a colored one.
  • Waterslide Decal Paper - Use waterslide injet decal paper for inkjet printers. Decal paper can be either clear, or white. Use white decal paper for dark colored mugs, or clear decal for light colored and white mugs. Transfer paper is similar in purpose to decal paper, but decal is preferable when creating photo mugs. Transfer paper is best used when transferring images to fabrics, or textured surfaces, such as shirts, or mouse-pads.
  • Computer
  • Image Editing Program - There are a some good free ones online like Picasa, and Gimp.
  • Inkjet Printer - If using decal paper, make sure your printer can accept it, because some can not.
  • Picture for the Mug
  • Scissors

Step 1: Choose a Photo - You'll want to choose a clean image. Make sure it's not noisy or blurred (unless that's the effect you want). You'll also want to make sure it's properly exposed and well focused.

Step 2: Edit Your Picture - Perform basic edits including removing red eye, cropping, and resizing.

Step 3: Print the Image to the decal paper. Before printing, determine if your printer has options for "media type" and/or "paper type". Choose the appropriate options.

Step 3: Allow time for the paper to dry.

Step 4: Cut out the photo as closely as possible to the design.

Step 5: Place the photo in lukewarm water for 1 minute, or until you can feel the image begin to slide away from the protective backing.

Step 6: Remove the protective backing and carefully apply the image to the photo mug. Make sure the surface of the mug is clean before applying.smoothing it down from the center outward. You don't want any water left behind the decal; this will help set it firmly in place. You don't want your image to slide off your mug when you wash it, or for the decal to start chipping off.

Step 7: Allow at least 4 hours for the decal to dry.

Now we'll look at the 2nd option-

Order from a Photo Printing Company

If you're ordering from a photo printing company just follow these simple instructions-

Step 1: Pick the mug-style you want

Step 2: Edit your photo. Basic edits include removing red eye, cropping, and resizing.

Step 3: Upload the edited photo, and follow any other directions given by the photo printing company.

Step 4: Wait to receive it in the mail.

The two easiest ways to make a photo mug are to do it yourself with injet waterslide decal paper or order from an online photo printing company. If you choose to do it yourself, remember that practice makes perfect. It may not come out the way you expect the first or second time, but keep at it until you master it. Whether you're keeping it for yourself, or giving it as a gift, photo mugs are fun and easy to make.

Who Else Wants Beautiful, Long-Lasting Photos?

The days when you were supposed to have a dark room to print photographs are now long gone. Digital technology has not only taken up photo cameras, but also photo printing. A digital printer makes the whole photo printing process much easier while also significantly improving the quality. While there are some people who still find digital photography a bit intimidating, there is no doubt that digital technology has revolutionized the photo industry and will continue to do so in the future.

You are no longer constrained by film size and quality. You can take hundreds of photos and then transfer the image files directly on your computer and manipulate them the way you want. There are many image editing applications on the market (some of them even free) that let you improve your photos to a great extent. Moreover, the digital viewfinder lets you visualize the area you are photographing and you can change the picture right then (e.g. make it black & white). You can also view the pictures on the embedded LCD screen and erase the ones that you don't like so they don't take up space. This would have been impossible with traditional cameras, when you didn't know how the photos looked like until you had them printed.

As for the printing part, most photographers are either printing the photos directly with an inkjet printer or use a digital image enlargement device. An inkjet printer is the best option in case you want the photos to look more like paintings. However, you have to remember that the quality of the ink and paper also play an important part. Paper quality has evolved a lot in the last years so photos produced nowadays can hardly be compared to traditional ones. Another way of printing digital photos is with a digital enlarger or light jet printer. Such devices use a digital dark room to process the photos. The photographer scans the image on the computer and then sends it to a digital enlarger, which exposes the photographic paper to laser jets. Then the paper is being processed using the same techniques as in traditional dark rooms that were used for film cameras. The only disadvantage of this type of printing is that the images look more like photographs, not paintings.

Digital prints have more vivid colors and sharpness compared to traditional printing methods. If you look at old photos, you often notice that they have faded out along the years. This process happens much slower with high quality digital printing. Depending on the quality of the paper and ink it can last up to two hundred years provided that it is not kept in direct sunlight. Digital photos have many other advantages. For example, after you have saved the photo on the computer, you can make as many printed copies as you want for much lower costs than with traditional photography. Digital technology is definitely the way forward in the photo industry and at some point it will probably become the only to take pictures.

Experience with photo transfers to fabric?

I am trying to find a photo transfer paper that will hold up to washing and drying. A couple of years ago I made about a dozen t-shirts using various brands, including some for transferring to dark fabrics. The ones for dark fabrics are pretty thick, which may be why they have held up better, but the regular ones started flaking and peeling after only one or two washes. I don't know why--I tried to follow the directions exactly and think I did. Can anyone offer any suggestions on specific brands, techniques, etc? I sure wish we had a specific category for sewing questions and answers, don't you? Has anyone found this type of question in any of the other categories? Thanks much.

I have had the exact same problem. I think the problem may be that these transfers may work best on fabrics have little to no strech as it seems the stretchier the fabric, the sooner it gets wrecked for me. Good luck, I hope you find a good answer as I am also curious to find out. :o )

BTW I don't use fabric softener or a drier for my clothes and they still peel. :o /

Pilgrimage on Richland Creek to Twin Falls
Richland Creek Wilderness is one of the hiking shrines of Arkansas's Boston Mountains. Almost 12,000 acres in extent, it's a region of extraordinarily steep and rugged terrain, gigantic boulders, and startling blue green water. But what it's probably best known for are its fabulous waterfalls.
