Chicago politicians are looking to take more of your money using Red Light Camera technology. The city aldermen have already proposed 2 more ways to add on to the $100 fine for an automated ticket.

The Chicago Tribune on March 17, 2009, reported that alderman "began talking about using the city's ever-growing legion of red-light cameras to check for vehicle liability insurance."

The city could bring in additional millions in fines just by citing uninsured vehicles that also get photo ticketed for a red-light violation. A company executive who sells instant insurance verification told the Chicago politicians "Citing more vehicles-including those driven safely but uninsured-could net the city more than $100 million a year."

The second revenue generator Chicago mulled over is mandatory traffic school classes for red light camera violations. You would have to pay an additional $25 to take the class! Yet another $14.5 million a year for the city. If you don't take the class, they will issue you an automated $50 fine. Take that out-of-state drivers!

The Chicago Tribune in follow-up articles found the majority of these tickets are for right turn on red violations where the driver did not make a complete stop before making the turn. Only a small number of tickets were for drivers who ran red lights. So how can you avoid a rolling right turn on red violation?

How to hide your License Plate from a Red Light Camera?

Does anyone know if there is a way to block a red light camera from taking a picture of your license plate? I was out on the road today and saw the flash go off when the man to the right of me went threw a yellow light. I thought this was a little unfair so I thought I would ask. Please don't respond with don't go threw red lights or slow down. I just want a real answer.

You can't get a ticket for a yellow light violation, they need a picture clearly showing the vehicle going through the red, the flash had to be for something else. Perhaps the camera, like ours in Winnipeg, has a speed sensor, and one of you was speeding.

Anything you do to block you plate is illegal, plain and simple, is easily spotted by the cops, and can get you pulled over and ticketed.
