If there's ever been an invention that's impacted the human race, besides the light bulb of course, it would be the camera. The introduction of the still photograph gave human beings the ability to freeze any moment in time and share it with others. The photograph has become part of everyday life and totally taken for granted. The technology that generates the photograph, in other words, the camera, is forever being perfected. Over the years, many types of cameras had been labeled as the best of the best, only to be outdone by a new technology that somehow happens to be just a bit better. The evolution of the camera has made for interesting conversation throughout the years. The innovations of early photography most predominatley include the achievement of permanent images for posterity.

Modern cameras, those produced over the last sixty years or so, have evolved in three major ways. Camera size, image quality, and image storage. The many innovations in design have led to obsolescence of previous technology deemed state of the art. Kodak, the pioneer in portable film cartridges introduced the roll of film back in 1914. The invention of an easy-to-load film would be one of the longest lasting photographic innovations, and it's still in use today. Other wonderful accomplishments were the flashbulb which enabled pictures to be well lit even in less than perfect natural lighting. From their invention in 1930, flashbulbs endured for nearly five decades before electronic flash phased them out entirely. 35mm film was wonderful, but how about the 110 film cartridge. The 110 film cartridge could be loaded and unloaded by a child, there was no winding, no mess, no instructions required, and no accidental exposure to sunlight. Seemed like a grand idea at the time but it too fell by the wayside probably based on picture quality. Kodak also thought they were revolutionizing the industry with the release o the disc camera. Film was conveniently secured to an easy to change circular disc. Advantages again were easy loading and unloading however the number of exposures were limited due to its overall size. And how can we forget the Polaroid. Polaroid invented the self-developing photograph in 1947. This popular form of photography was well used for an unlimited amount of applications. Although the picture quality could never compete with other film types and traditional developing, it was the perfect solution when a photograph was required to be instantaneous. The demise of the Polaroid came nearly sixty years after its inception to the chagrin of many Polaroid fans. There have been a great many of these seemingly priceless innovations in cameras and photography throughout the years.

The real revolution, however, was the computer age. Converting a photographic image to a computer file and then having the ability to display the image on computer screens or transfer the image elsewhere in the world is simply amazing. The digital camera gives us the ability to capture digital images not requiring any film or film developing whatsoever. Computer data images can be stored within the camera, moved to portable storage devices, or printed from virtually any computer printer. This was, in the opinion of many in the industry, the greatest change in the world of photography. Obsolescence knocked on the door of many film manufacturers. A lighter workload and slumping sales have hit film developing companies as well. Will the film camera become the next casualty? Experts say it can never happen, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see what's in the future of photographic technology and consumer trends.
