Sunglasses were never initially invented for the purpose of protecting the eyes from the sun. In fact, they were invented during the time of the Chinese dynasties when their judges had to wear dark-tinted glasses to protect the people from discerning their facial expressions through the eyes.

The dark tint on the glasses was achieved by taking flat cuts of quartz and using a smoke tinting method very much different from the glass and plastic lenses that are simply popped into the glasses' frame today. Of course, having a dark tint also gave the people the ability to protect themselves from the sun but they didn't really use it for that purpose.

The other uses for sunglasses only came about in 1430 when Italy introduced eyeglasses that could correct vision. After that year, little by little, sunglasses were used for correcting vision and sun protection but they were still mostly used by the judges to prevent people from reading their expressions.

The term "sunglasses" wasn't even used back then; they were commonly known as spectacles. It was only until the mid-18th century that James Ayscough, an English man, introduced the idea of using green or blue tinted glass to correct vision. Although sun protection wasn't his main goal, he had a passion for experimenting with different colors of specs for eyeglasses and he hoped that he could find a way to make them readjust a person's vision.

During the 20th century, sunglasses rapidly become the newest trend. At first, it was only a trend among movie stars who needed them to protect their eyes from stage lights. Before filming, they would wear sunglasses to prevent their eyes from drying out. Wearing sunglasses prevented their eyes from looking too tired and bloodshot on camera. Because of the celebrity trend, mass production was soon underway in 1929, spearheaded by an American man named Sam Foster. The trend picked up, beginning in New Jersey where everyone wore them at the beach. Soon enough, everyone on the streets were wearing a pair of sunglasses.

Through the years, as developments in technology emerged, the world was introduced to Polaroid film. This was in 1936 when Edwin H. Land founded the Polaroid Corporation, producing films that filter and polarize light for a very economical price. Consequently, they infused this invention with glasses to create what we now know as the polarized sunglasses.

Before anyone knew it, sunglasses boomed all over the world. Americans, movie stars, music artists, and virtually anyone wore them as a symbol of looking trendy. Bridging the gap between learning and social activity can be tough on school children as well as the teacher. Recognizing altruistic behavior encourages students to "pay it forward" monthly, and teaches them that helping others not only feels good, but is often rewarded. Having a shout out on the bulletin board can be the reward in and of itself, but you may also want to add an extra incentive like a gift card or a couple of movie tickets, depending on the age group of the class.

3. Spotlight The Environment, For Example Create A Section Called "Going Green".

Every month, students will be able to research a different endangered animal. This will inadvertently help them learn about unique animals as well as different cultures, at the same time.

Invest in a Polaroid camera and let students be the photographers that day. They will enjoy taking pictures of each other and then watching them "appear". The above list may prove to be far too much information for one bulletin board, so feel free to use two or three in your classroom to promote and encourage the same or similar themes. Another solution is to use a combination bulletin board, featuring a cork board on one side, and a white board on the other. This allows students to draw happy birthday messages with colorful markers on the whiteboard, while posting up pictures, holiday decorations, and upcoming event information on the cork side. Combination message boards come in several sizes with some being as large as 72" x 48".

This list is meant to be used as a guide to promote creativity in the classroom, as well as find good use for that boring bulletin board. It is not necessary to use just the five ideas mentioned above. Depending on your class you may have different things in mind to go along with your particular themes and interests. By decorating a classroom with your students, you will enable them to be creative, work as a team and practice altruistic behavior. Most importantly, this will help students cognitively associate learning with fun.

What film would a Polaroid Land Camera 500 take?

I have a Polaroid Land Camera 500 and don't know what film it takes. Would anyone know what type of film and where I might be able to get some, and also if you could tell me how to insert it into the camera and how the camera works.

The Polaroid 500 should be similar to the Polaroid OneStep.
It was designed for SX-70 film which is an instant integral film.
SX-70 film is not produced for quite while and only old stock is available, mostly from online sources.
It can be used with 600 film but this film has higher sensitivity to light. Also the 600 film cassette needs some trimming (2 center nubs at the backside have to be cut) or you load it using a piece of cardboard underneth the cassette.

600 film is still available from online sources but it's also older stock - some already outdated so be careful when buying. Everything with an expiry date 2009 should be still fine. Probably also 2008 - older ones will be unpredictable in quality.

The Impossible Project will be marketing film for Classic Polaroid cameras from beginning of next year on. Ican't tell for the moment if they will produce SX-70 compatible film as well as 600 film but I hope for both types. So don't throw the camera away if you don't find film right now - everything might be different in 6 weeks.

To load the film you have to open the camera front - there should be something like a lever on the right side. Part of the lower front will come open and you just push the cassette in. It has a tab or something on one side for removing it this should point to the front so you can pull it out when empty. Cassettes have the batteries inside so no extra batteries needed.

Shooting is easy: Just look through the finder and when what you pleases you push the button on the right side of the lens (I think it's red or maybe green). Turn the know on the other side of the lens to dark when using 600 film - it won't be overexposed that much then.
