Why do people choose to spend more money to own log cabins? A standard construction one would meet their needs. But they still choose to make a larger investment and go with log. Why? Because of the log home love affair. I am one who has been bitten by this bug. Outdoor living, mountains, rustic cabins, the humongous log lodge constructed at Old Faithful Geyser at Yellowstone National Park, are backdrops where log homes just seem to belong. But beauty is more than skin deep with these special homes. Over the years the construction features of cabins has been improved and enhanced to make them tighter, more energy efficient (and they already were very energy efficient when incorporating precision cuts, good log assembly, and sealants).

When researching for this article, I was amazed to discover which country is the world leader in log home design. United States? No. Canada? No. Holland or Japan? No again. FINLAND. Yes, Finland has been the world leader in log home manufacturing.

What are some of these features? Let's explore a log cabin kits together...

BUTT JOINTS:

First let's look at the butt joints of a log home. A butt joint is where one log ends and the next begins. When a log home is erected, you go one log at a time all the way around the home. As each course is laid the butt joints are where one log ends and the next begins. The oldest form of joinery is simply cutting the logs and pushing the ends up against each other. This leaves a gap that just gets bigger as the logs shrink. All logs shrink, and even a small movement will allow you to look right through the joint.

To improve this a spleen system was developed. This consists of the logs have a channel cut into the end of the log and a 2x4, down rod, or vinyl spleen being driven down into the hole. This is not a bad system. The room for error with a spleen is on the job site. When stacking the logs it is easy to forget put the spleen in before the next log row is assembled. And there is no way to go back and install it. Also there is time required for notching each log.

The very best form of log joinery is finger joints. These are cut at the mill, thus no extra cutting on the job site. Like skinny fingers reaching out to each other, the butt joint slide together like a glove. Also there is added strength to the joint. The west wind can blow, but the finger joinery will keep it on the outside.

GABLE FLASHING:

The gable end of a cabin is where the roof angle climbs to the peak above the top of the walls. In home construction the gable area can be finished in a variety of ways. Standardly, except for a Swedish Cope stack home, the gable ends are framed and then some sort of siding installed over the framing. Many time true match log siding is used for this. Other times home owners choose to use 1x6 pine or cedar tongue and groove, wood shakes, or board and batton. Swedish Cope cut homes typically use a solid log all the way to the top of the gables.

There are several advantages to framing the end and then installing some sort of siding. The main benefit is to reduce the amount of shrinkage. Also it gives more exterior design choices in the gables.

This is where gable flashing comes into play. The area where the log ends and the framing begins is a critical area. The gable flashing is installed to prevent the water and moisture from laying on the log. It is also used above door and window openings.

INTERIOR LOG WALLS:

The vast majority of log homes are constructed with only the outside walls of solid logs. But imagine interior walls of log as well. On wide homes and Great Rooms with timber roof ceilings the solid log interior walls are the strongest construction method. A solid log wall is the most structurally sound option. Screw jacks and posts or framing can be used, but solid log walls are the best.

PRE-DRILLING OF ELECTRIC BOX HOLES AND WIRE HOLES:

Another area of improvement is the installation of electric wire holes. Anyone who has built a log cabin knows the difficulty involved in drilling and chiseling out the channels for the wire and boxes. Many times floor outlets are used to simplify things. Other construction options are to pull the wires up through the door frames and then drilling over to the electric box hole.

Finland once again pioneered in this area. Pre-drilling of electric box holes and wire holes by a computerized mill is the cleanest and most precise available. Instead of scarred logs and rough openings, not to mention hours of time, this pre-drilling is any electricians dream. They can't believe when they come to the house and all of it is done and ready for the wires and boxes.

WEATHER TIGHT PACKAGE:

The tightest log home design available is a computerized mill that produces a pre-cut pre-numbered package. Timber roof systems are best if done by the mill the package is coming from. The home is erected at the mill and then the roof system is cut on site to match. Then everything is dissembled and packaged for shipment.

Choosing The Right Cnc Plasma Cutting System

Many plasma cutting machines advertise claims that they are well built and can last for years to come, but only some are able to hold true to such claims. Plasma cutters that are well built with quality components will be the only ones that last the test of time.

There are several factors to consider when choosing a well quality machine.

Typically speaking, most shop needs require cutting plates with a thickness of 2" or more for days on end.  So it is important to choose an industrial quality table that can withstand constant, rigorous usage

The overall design should be fully-welded design with a large stable base that can support heavy weight.  A stable platform or base is key to the cutting process.  If the base moves or waivers during cutting you will have trouble achieving the precise cuts you require and the process will begin to consume your time. Choose a professional grade machine with a stable base.  It will help ensure accurate and precise cutting to produce professional grade products.

Next, the plasma torch and the torch height control can be critical in determining cut accuracy. You can substantially increase efficiency with a plasma cutter that uses the highest quality automatic servo controlled arc voltage system. You will achieve a faster response, shorter pre-flow times and more precise integration.

Next, the components need to be designed and machined to work together. The rack mount and linear guides must work inclusively together.  The spiral rack and pinion and linear drives must integrate smoothly, accelerating with ease and accuracy.

Your nesting application is another important consideration that will harness the full potential of a quality plasma cutter.  You need it to be easy to set up and learn, simple and to the point.  You don't want to waste your time with complex applications that you don't need or are to cumbersome.

Lastly, you should consider the overall expansion for future possibilities based on the features packed into the CNC machine. Does the application package include a combination of configurations and expansion features?  A flexible machine package can take you a long way is. Consider your needs, long term intentions and overall goals when choosing a CNC plasma cutting system.

The bottom line is an accurate and durable CNC plasma cutter is the sum of it is parts. Choose a high quality CNC plasma cutter capable of growing to meet your company and client's changing needs.

Unless you are living beyond your needs, spending a little extra buying a quality machine is typically the best bet.

Where can I buy blank pre-cut cards to write questions, a blank game board & pieces for a game?

I have a great idea for a new game that I want to play with my family. I don't plan on marketing this idea, just want to make a nice game using a blank board, blank pre-cut cards that I don't have to cut myself, and game board pieces. Do you know where I can buy these items? Thanks!

Yes, they do make them! You just need to know where to look!
