Use a tripod if you can

A tripod is an indispensable piece of equipment. However, they are often large, heavy and cumbersome. In many instances you simply won't be able to use a tripod to get the picture you need. But, without one, your images will be inferior won't they? Perhaps, but if you follow the following guidelines, then you'll be in a better position to get the most out of your camera.

Use a fast shutter speed

Use the fastest shutter speed that you can. The longest shutter speed that will guarantee pin sharp images is 1/60. Some people will claim that they can get sharp images at 1/30 or even 1/15 - don't listen to them.

Consider your lens

The focal length of your lens is important - the longer the focal length, the faster the shutter speed needs to be to ensure a steady hand. A good rule of thumb is to choose a minimum shutter speed which is equivalent to 1/focal length. So a 100mm lens needs a shutter speed of 1/100 whereas a 400mm lens needs one of 1/400 and so on

Go faster if you can

Try to err on the side of caution and choose an even faster shutter speed where you can. The problem is that the longer the focal length, the smaller the maximum aperture is likely to be thus restricting your choice of shutter speed. The bigger the aperture you choose the faster the shutter speed you can use.

Action requires it even faster

Fast cars, trains, lorries; people moving, running, jumping; animals, waves, trees in the wind - these all require you to be even more careful as the shutter speed required to freeze movement is already relatively fast. Just rack up the speed to the fastest the camera will allow. The shorter the focal length and the wider the aperture, the more successful you will be in freezing movement.

Stand steadfast

Posture is important. If you cannot get a fast shutter speed (in relation to your lens) then choose an appropriate stance when taking your pictures. Lean against a building, wall or fence if you can. Stand with legs apart and brace your elbows against your sides. If it is windy, wait for a lull.

Try and rest your camera or lens against something solid and hold it firmly. And ensure it is well braced against your forehead.

Breathe and be gentle

Take a deep breath and hold it when you click the shutter release. And when you do take the picture, make slow and smooth movements. No sudden stabs or jerks.

Remember - ISO is your friend

Most cameras allow you to change the ISO setting. The bigger the ISO you set, the faster the shutter speed you can choose. You will get more "noise" or "grain" in your images but it can mean the difference between a half decent picture no picture at all.

Tripod alternatives

Even if you haven't got a tripod, it is worth considering a minipod or monopod. These are no substitute for a decent tripod but they are small, light and inexpensive. Another great piece of equipment is a small beanbag. This can be placed on a surface and will mould to the shape of the camera when it is placed on it.

Remote is best

If you can use a cable release or an infrared remote release then do so. Or, when the camera is steady, using the self timer will allow shutter release without you manhandling the camera.

Don't underestimate the importance of good technique and style. You will get better pictures by following simple and commonsense steps such as those outlined above.

Have fun

Nokia X6 Network Release - New X6 On O2

The recently launched Nokia X6 is the first of two 32GB models to make it onto the O2 network, joining the Blue and Silver edition this new Red and Black colour variant can now be connected to a good range of O2 pay monthly contract tariffs from free.

Just as the manufacturer announces the release of a cut down Nokia X6 16GB model in a variety of colour schemes their larger 32GB model has finally made it to market, the blue edition of this latest music phone was launched as an Orange network exclusive back in December of last year and is also now being offered as a SIM Free and unlocked mobile phone.

The X6 is from the new X-Range of Nokia phones that has taken over from the orignial XpressMusic name after the last ever model was launched called the Nokia 5230, a mid range touch screen phone that is an affordable alternative to the popular but more expensive Nokia 5800.

The design of the handsets has also changed with the manufacturer opting for more squared corners and a more sleek overall format, sporting a large 3.2 inch touch screen as also found in the Nokia N97 Mini the X6 concentrates on both music and video playback and download as well as its advanced 5.0 mega pixel camera with Carl Ziess lens.

As far as music phones go, there is not a great deal of competition in the current market place for this advanced model, with a sliding design rather than a touch screen there is the Sony Ericsson W995 which is also a music focused phone with a slightly better resolution camera at 8.1 mega pixels but the different design format will not appeal to the new touch screen loving masses.

The main competition will no doubt comes from within the manufacturers own portfolio with the release of the Nokia X6 16GB, this new model offers all of the same great features found in the original X6 devices but strips the memory back from 32GB to 16GB to keep the price down as well as offer different colour schemes as well as pre-loaded goodies such as the entire Gavin & Stacey series 3.

The 16GB X6 will still hold an impressive 5,500 music tracks which will be more than enough for most, however it is not due to be released until mid April which may be a little too long for those dedicated mobile music fans to hold out.

I have an old Rolleiflex with a zeiss 3.5 lens, and whenever i crank the camera, the shutter opens. HELP!?

I have an old Rolleiflex with a zeiss 3.5 lens, and whenever i crank the camera, the shutter opens. It is very annoying because it doesnt allow me to trip the shutter with the release button. Everytime i crank it, the shutter opens and closes. Why is this? What can I do?

I've had mine apart and worked on the wind/cocking mechanism, however it's been a while. My best advice would be to seek out an experienced repairman, as working on these things is not for the faint of heart. I managed to get mine back together and working, but mostly by pure luck,

Normally, on a Rolleiflex, you wind the crank forward until it stops, and then pull it back. The shutter gets cocked on the back stroke. Is the shutter opening as you crank forward, or as you pull back? If you could please click "add more information" and provide this information, it could help narrow down the problem a whole lot.
