You have begun photographing weddings and now it is time to upgrade your gear to the Pro's level. Through your experience and research on other professional wedding photographers, you realize that there is an assortment of different tastes of the perfect lenses for wedding photography. The truth is, there is no perfect kit. Here I will give you a flavour of a few lens I feel you must have when photographing a wedding.

Portrait Lens

The most important lens to have is a portrait lens. To know how to choose a preferred portrait lens over another, it is important to understand some of the fundamentals of how a lens works.

When you direct a camera at a subject, you produce an image through the viewfinder (this is where the photographer looks through in a digital camera). The lens on the camera magnifies the image producing an image that is either 'x' times more closer or 'x' times more smaller. Different bodies calculate the magnification at different ratios. A typical focal length you would want for a portrait shot is 85mm. A 50mm lens with a body that magnifies 1.6x (crop factor) should do the trick. It is always a good thing to try shooting portrait photos at a distance. Although there are no strict guidelines in how you take your photos, keep in mind that when you move up closer to your subject, the larger the object is you are focusing on in the forefront. Here are just a few suggestions for your next purchase of wedding portrait lenses.

Nikon 50mm f/1.8

This is a prime lens. It retails for about $140 CAD and is one of the best lens you can get for the small price tag it's got. The lens has a wide aperture of 1.8 allowing you to really focus in on a subject, while blurring your background. Very cool effect.

Nikon 85mm f/1.4

This is also a prime lens, probably one of the best in the market right now for wedding photography. Although it is a bit more pricy ($1,180 CAD), the amount of detail and sharpness you get from this lens is unimaginable.

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8

This is a telephoto (zoom) lens that could be your only purchase of zoom lenses. Not only does it produce sharp photos, but you can get up in front of your subject as close as 200mm. At 1.6x crop, your focal length is about 320mm. Imagine that, the only telephoto lens you will ever need. A nifty lens like the 70-200mm comes with a nifty price tag too. You can purchase this lens for about $1,800 CAD.

Those are just a few of the portrait lenses you should have for taking wedding photographs. I would recommend sticking with Nikon branded lenses if you have a Nikon body. Other brands such as Sigma and Tamron has similar lenses that can produce matching results if you've mastered using their lenses. Continue reading and learning about wedding photography techniques. After you've equipped yourself with quality gear, the next step is all in your imagination and creativity. Go capture it!

DSLR Lens For Beginners - Sigma 18-250

How would you like to attach the very best lens to your new DSLR, one that will handle almost every situation you will face as a photographer? Well you can. Read on to find out about the Sigma 18-250mm DSLR Lens.

When most photographers purchase that first digital SLR camera, they just take it for granted that the lens that comes with the camera is the best one they can get. It ain't necessarily so.

What is commonly know as a kit lens, the one that is marketed with the camera, is an adequate lens, there is no doubt. However, you would do yourself a disservice if you did not do a bit of research and thinking about what your needs are before you take the plunge and invest in a lens that may not necessarily be the right one to meet your needs.

Take into consideration what your needs are. First of all, you want to be able to take a wide range of shots, which means a diverse range of focal lengths.

You may also like to keep a single lens on your camera when you are moving about or traveling.

Depending upon your budget, you may also be looking for the absolute best possible lens for the money without having to auction off your first born child.

The Sigma 18-250mm lens fills the bill for all of these criteria. It has a diverse focal range so that you can take wide angles shots such as landscapes or cityscapes on the one end. And it has a zoom range up to 250mm to get those long range shots, such as nature shots in the wild or at the local zoo.

The image quality has been rated as very good by those who test camera equipment. The build quality is also rated very good.

It is fast to focus because of the hyper-sonic motor.

There is high quality glass in order to avoid distortion of the light entering the camera through the lens.

On the negative side, the Sigma 18-250mm lens is not as fast as some of its more expensive competitors. It has an aperture of f/3.5-f/6.0. What that means is that a lens with a more wide open aperture, say f/2.8, would have a much faster shutter speed, making it a better lens for low light shots. Of course, if you want a lens with f/2.8, you will have to pay much more for it.

What the Sigma 18-250mm lens gives up in aperture it makes up in price. See what other lens you might consider as a general walk around lens at http://www.digital-photographic-resources.com. You will be surprised at how well it performs.

About the Author

I love photography and all things related to it. Cameras, camera gear, and image editing software fascinate me, so I am either buying the newest piece of equipment (or software) or researching my next purchase. Because of my research, you can cut down on yours. Visit www.digital-photographic-resources.com for suggestions about cameras and gear that may be right for you.

With the same zoom (18-200) and speed (f3.5/6.3), which is the better lens, Tamaron or Sigma?

Looking for a low cost lens form my Canon digital camera.

They are both comperable, the tamron will be cheaper [only a bit], but both too slow for my liking. IMO, you're better off spending $50-$100 more and getting a canon lens of equivalent focal lenth that is, at the very least, faster at the long end than f/6.3 [they're not all that much cheaper, either way you're spending $300-$400 anyway]. Personally, I would never buy a slower third-party lens for the sake of saving those 50-100 bucks over a lens designed with the camera, not just for it, in the same general price range. Don't get me wrong, sigma and tamron both make good fast aperture lenses, but where quality counts in a slower lens, I'd rather stick with the manufacterer of my camera. If you can live with f/6.3 on the long end, sure go with either one. Sigma's DC series lenses seem to be a bit more sturdy, but a few dollars more usually.

~EDITED~

I just had to add another note, for the sake of arguement when I read the answer below mine. Optics? No photographer I have ever known gets the specs on optics, to that extent when choosing good glass, least of all anyone other than a pro. As a matter of fact, the manufactuerers of lenses don't even make that information available, and if it were, it is way too much to research based on simply the need to know. And as far as that is concerned, you don't need to know that information to buy a good lens. I'll agree that reading the reviews, as the last answerer suggested is always best, but "fluor" is utterly moot and of no use to you, unless you are an optics engineer. If you want to go into all of that, be my guest, but if you want to be an informed consumer, do like the rest of us [real] photographers and read reviews, keep your reciept, take some shots, and determine on your own whether the lens you buy is good for your needs.
