Consumers today have been weighing the pros and cons of buying a point and shoot camera or buying a digital SLR. Both can be excellent for the right individuals, but more and more people are beginning to see the great benefits and advantages to a high quality point and shoot camera like the Nikon Coolpix over options from the class of digital SLR models. Here are a few reasons why you may want to consider this as well.
One of the major advantages to buying a point and shoot camera is that you will be saving a great deal of money. A digital SLR is going to be much more expensive than even the best and most feature-rich point and shoot camera models. This means that not only are you saving money, but you're also getting more for the money you do spend because of all of the options and capabilities you receive.
With a camera like the Nikon Coolpix for instance, you'll have at your fingertips a huge array of different settings, scenes, options and easy customizations and configurations that you can deploy. For most people, the highly priced digital SLRs out there have a lot of features that you're not even going to use. So while the quality and potential might be fantastic, for the most part it won't really apply to your everyday usage which means it's probably not the best way to spend your money.
Another consideration to keep in mind is that a point and shoot camera is also going to be much smaller in size and more portable. You can throw the Nikon Coolpix in your back pocket and not worry about carrying it around, or it can easily fit into another bag that you're already carrying. A digital SLR though is going to typically need its own bag or neck strap, and won't be able to be carried in your pocket or a small, multifunctional bag.
Don't forget that a digital SLR is going to require that you purchase other gear as well. You will need to purchase the correct lenses for your camera, and these can be extremely pricey. You will probably need more than one to cover all of your needs because of how specialized they are, as opposed to the all around multifunctional lens that is already included with a point and shoot camera like the Nikon Coolpix.
You'll also need the right storage and cleaning supplies for your digital SLR to help prevent it from being damaged and exposed. This can include nasty fungus, dirt and dust which can infiltrate your separate lens and the camera body itself as well.
So is a point and shoot camera the ideal solution for everybody? No, there are certainly some individuals who need the fine level of control and a maximum level of capability and quality with their cameras. However, for the vast majority of consumers, a point and shoot camera like the Nikon Coolpix will be able to satisfy all of your needs and wants while coming in a more convenient package and costing you a great deal less cash.

SLR Digital Photography Tips And Tricks of the Trade
If you are looking for any of the following features in your next camera you should take a look at purchasing a real digital SLR:
reliability; SLR bodies almost never fail; by comparison, point and shoot cameras are built for light weight and low cost big bright accurate optical viewfinder good quality images in low natural light, e.g., indoors without blasting everything with flash ability to attach specialty lenses, e.g., very wide angle lenses for interiors, scenery, and architecture, or long telephoto lenses for sports photography Choosing the right camera system is covered in a separate article on this server: "Building a Digital SLR System".
Accessories You might want a lens cleaning kit.
You will definitely need at least one memory card. Most of the compact digital cameras take SD cards. If you are taking JPEG photos rather than RAW, you'll be able to fit between 250 and 500 images in a 1 GB card.
1 GB SD cards: SanDisk 2 GB SD cards: SanDisk 4 GB SD cards: SanDisk (good for a long trip into a remote area where you can't copy images to a computer) Personally, I have found that it is more convenient to use a single memory card for an entire project or trip rather than juggling multiple cards.
If you plan on wearing the camera on your belt you may want to consider purchasing a small padded case. Lowe and Tamrac are generally the highest quality brands. The manufacturers' own brand cases are generally the lowest quality.
Tamrac publishes a useful fit chart. Lowepro's is a huge PDF.
Tamrac Ultra Compact Tamrac T17 Tamrac Digital 1 (slimmer digital cameras, plus extra pocket) Tamrac Digital 2 (compact cameras) Tamrac Digital 3 (SLR-like) If you have time and a good local shop, it is best to buy the case in person so that you can make sure you like the fit.

Digital SLR Camera body for my Minolta lenses?
My dad just gave me his old Minolta film camera with 3 lenses. Minolta went out of business since he's had it but I would like to get a digital SLR camera body that would fit all the lenses he gave me. Anyone know of a digital camera body that would fit Minolta's film lenses?
If the lenses are the older SR mount used on the SRT-100, 101, 102, 200, 201, 202 and X series, XG-9, XD-11, XE-7, X-700 then you can buy an adapter to use them on the current Sony DSLR cameras.
If the lenses are the A-mount first introduced on the Maxxum 7000 and still used by Sony then all you need is a Sony A230/330/380,700,850900 and your Maxxum AF lenses will work perfectly. The A850 & A900 are Sony's full-frame (24x36) DSLRs.
