As a professional photographer, I am often asked "I am ready to upgrade from my point and shoot camera. What type of digital SLR camera should I buy?" I am known in my community as the photography expert and I was asked this question just the other day as I stood in line at a downtown coffee shop. "Do you like Canon or Nikon better?" It was hard to get my cup of coffee the other day, but I do enjoy talking about cameras and helping people make a wise and practical decision that fits their budget and needs.

First you should assess your needs for a digital SLR system. I have rated over 12 new DSLR cameras in my latest review on my website and have categorized users into three levels:

1) Serious amateur

2) Rising Professional

3) Professional with some bucks

Each user level has distinct differences in features and in pricing. Many of the newer features in current model SLR cameras include video capture, image stabilization built into the camera body, face detection, ISO range to 3200 or 6400, live view system, dust reduction system and dynamic range optimization. More advanced features include fast fps (frames per second), size of the sensor and mega- pixels.

What are your needs for a new camera system? If you are unfamiliar with some of the terminology above, you will have some research to do in order to make a wise decision. I suggest to start with a small list of features that you know you would like to have and then go online or to my website and research Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, and Sigma manufacturers. I always recommend going to a local camera store for the expertise of the sales people. They can guide you through an important decision like this and you can have a hands-on demonstration of your camera choices. Be prepared as you may pay more there than if you ordered on-line. You must assess how much their knowledge is worth to you. I have also found that if you make a purchase at a local store, they will provide you with free classes and customer support.

The more you know about the features available in the line-up of the current digital SLR cameras, the better choice you will make in making this very important first time purchase.

I have also categorized each camera into a pricing level

1) Low- under $1000

2) Moderate - $1000 - $2000

3) High - $2000 and up

In the moderate and high ranges most cameras will include the body only. This is because they are geared more for professionals, while the low category is aimed more at amateurs who may not know a lot about lenses. So make sure you know what is included when you make your purchase.

There are many popular camera choices in the low category such as the Canon Rebel Xsi and the Nikon D90. Do not overlook other manufacturers if this is your price range. Also look at the Sony a350, Pentax K2000, Olympus E-520 and the Sigma SD15. Cameras in this price range will be affordable and great starter systems to get you going in the photography arena.

If you are interested in using your new digital SLR camera for professional use, either on a part-time or full-time basis, I suggest you do not purchase from this category, because you could embarrass yourself when your client shows up with the same camera. They are really intended for amateur use only.

The next step up is the moderate price level. Many excellent cameras exist in this category and are still reasonably priced, in my opinion. The top choices are the Canon 5D, Nikon D-300, the new Olympus E-30 and the Fuji S-5. If you are thinking of going pro now or sometime in the near feature, the features in these cameras are far better than the low category. You will definitely get more bang for your buck.

The highest level includes cameras ranging from $2000 to over $7000 for the new Nikon D3X priced at almost $8000 (body only). Typically photographers choose in this range for the full frame sensor feature and large number of mega-pixels (20 or more). Other features include a very top ISO range up to 6400, very fast frames per second, ideal for sports photographers, rugged camera bodies built for nature photographers. These systems have the pro in mind for every feature. They are incredible cameras and you will not have to worry about clients showing up with the same camera as you.

Purchasing a new camera is like purchasing any new electronics. The prices and features vary and the choices are plentiful. My advice has always been to go one step over what you think you need. In the long run, you will not be sorry and the extra couple hundred dollars that you spend will soon be long forgotten.

How do you take professional quality photos with SLR camera?

Hi I've recently bought a Nikon D80 Camera.

I'm just wonder what settings do people use to take high quality professional looking photos?

I understand a lot of the professional photos we see on the interent or magazines are edited by photoshop, but how to do they take good photos for editing with SLR cameras?

First, know thy camera. READ & STUDY the Owner's Manual until you fully understand every setting and feature and when, how and why to use them.

Second, there are no universal "... settings that people use to tahe high quality professional looking photos..." Unless you are limiting yourself to studio photography where everything is completely controlled, every situation is different. Sure, you can leave the camera on Auto or Program and let it choose an f-stop and shutter speed but doing that means you've wasted the money you spent for your D80. You should have just bought a digicam.

Suppose I'm out hiking in the woods. I see a clump of wildflowers in a shaded area. On goes my 100mm macro lens and then my macro ring flash. Since I know my equipment, I'll use 2 of the 4 flash tubes and f11. The result? A perfect exposure. An hour later I'm in bright sunlight looking at a bed of hybrid peonies. No need for the flash. Maybe a 50mm lens at f16 and let the camera choose a shutter speed. (I shoot in Aperture Preferred 99% of the time. I like lots of Depth of Field so I want to control the aperture). If the shutter speed drops below 1/125 sec. I open up to f11. Another perfect exposure. Now its night and I'm looking across the river at the city skyline. Mount the camera on a tripod, use ISO 200 and f8 for 15 seconds. One more perfect exposure.

I am in control of my camera. It does what I want it to do. Being in control of your camera must be your goal as well.

Third, learn to slow down. Look at a scene or subject from several perspectives. Standing up. Sitting down. Lying down. Learn to look at everything in your viewfinder, not just your subject. Your signifigant other won't look too good with a tree or pole "growing" from their head or a powerline "running" through it. That empty bottle or can or fast food wrapper probably won't add anything to your composition. Look at the background. If you think the sky may be blown out then work to eliminate as much of it as possible.

Slow down. All too often, people use what I call the "machine gunner" approach to their photography. Take 300 exposures and hope 10 are worth saving. (One person in here said that if they took 1,000 pictures and got 1 good one they were happy. IMO you'd get better results if you gave the camera to a chimpanzee). I prefer the "sniper approach" - 1 exposure, 1 photo worth keeping. Sure, even the most experienced sniper misses occasionally. You choose. Take 300 exposures and then sit at your computer searching for the few worth keeping or take 30 or 40 exposures and have 25 or 35 worth keeping - and spend quality time with your camera, not your computer. Visit your library and check out the books on beginning photography. Read all the photography magazines they subscribe to and if one especially appeals to you subscribe to it. Starting your own personal photography library is also worthwhile.
