Missiles in Cuba
In 1962 the relations between the United States of America and the USSR were worsened. Some of the Soviet missiles were located on the territory of Cuba. This act was considered to be a threat of the Americans with weapons. The cold war started.
In April of the same year the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, felt the pressure of the United States. American missiles were installed in Turkey, the country lying across the Black sea from Russia. To hit the States it would take Moscow some 25 minutes, American missiles could hit the Soviet Union in 10 minutes. Nikita Khrushchev and Marshal Rodion Malinovsky discussed this issue. It was decided that the Soviet missiles should be placed as much closer to America. The plan was told to another colleague of Khrushchev – to the Minister Anastas Mikoyan. The soviet government made the decision of putting some MRBM’s (Medium Range Ballistic Missiles) in Cuba, the closest place to the U.S.
In early May there was a meeting between Khrushchev, Mikoyan and other Soviet Government advisors. Khrushchev requested and Alekseev came back from Havana to Moscow. Alekseev was announced to be the new Soviet ambassador to Cuba. He knew the plan about missiles’ placing. Marshal Biryuzov and Alekseev were sent to Cuba by Khrushchev in order to get the idea of Castro’s reaction and to provide cover for the mission. They needed to know if it was possible to deploy the missiles in secrecy. The Soviets offered the Cubans the military support. Castro considered that such kind of actions would defend the Cuban revolution. He wanted to struggle with American Imperialism.

what is the difference between the USSR and the Soviet Union?
i was just wondering cuz im writing an english ppr 2day
There is no difference. You can think of USSR as the abbreviation of the more formal name. A similar example today is the People's Republic of China, which we informally call China.
Deadly blast overshadows Russia's May Day events
A bomb blast Saturday in Russia's volatile south that killed a 94-year-old World War II soldier cast a shadow over nationwide May Day celebrations led by Communists, many of them war veterans.
