How safe is the water you are drinking? If you use one of those pitchers with Brita water filters in it you may not have as safe of water as you could get using a different filtering method. Of course using any filter is better than drinking water right out of the faucet, but wouldn't you rather have all unhealthy substances removed, than just a portion of them.
You may be using Brita water filters because they are the best selling filters you can buy. Notice I did not say they were the best water filters you could buy, only that they are the best selling. One of the reasons they earn that title is they sell more filters than anyone else. And one of the reasons they sell more is the initial cost to purchase one is less.
The initial cost may be less expensive, than other brands and models, like an Aquasana countertop model, but that is where the cost savings ends. It costs about 22 cents a gallon to purify a gallon of water in those Brita pitchers, but it only cost 9 cents per gallon in the Aquasana counter top model.
Plus the Aquasana filter removes more dangerous contaminates. Those water pitchers remove some contaminates, but the filters are so small they cannot possibly filter out all the dangerous chemicals in our water supply today. They don't filter out the THM's, or chlorination byproducts. These harmful THM's trigger the free radical production in our bodies, which are highly carcinogenic and cause damage at the cellular level in the form of cancers.
So don't just look at what models are the least expensive in the beginning to buy. Look at the long-term cost of operating and look at the performance data sheets to find out what they remove from your drinking water.
If the performance data sheets don't list a certain contaminate on their sheet, you can almost always be assured the dangerous chemical is still in your water after it goes through their filter. If in doubt write them or email them and ask them if you are in question of any particular contaminate.
What ever water purification product you use, whether it be Brita water filters, Aquasana water filtration systems or any other method of purification check out their web sites and compare total costs, both initial cost and cost of filters including how many gallons of water they filter. Also find out the percentage of removal for all contaminates and decide for your self which system is best.
And remember just because Brita water filters are the best selling, they are not the best at filtering out dangerous contaminates.

Best Refrigerator Water Filter: Your Search is Over
A lot of homemakers no longer use pitchers to dispense water. Several refrigerators already come packaged with built-in water dispensers for convenient water dispensing in the home. But just as there are pitcher water filters that filter out the water dispensed by pitchers, there are also refrigerator water filters that can be attached to your fridge to make sure you still get pure and clean drinking water.
Here are the top three brands and offers in the refrigerator water filter market.
Maytag: Puriclean II for Pure Drinking Water
With 4.8 stars on Amazon, Maytag’s UKF8001 Puriclean II refrigerator water filter is a top-of-the-line fridge water filter from Maytag, a leading manufacturer of drinking water filters. The Puriclean II line is an NSF-certified filter that can effectively reduce harmful contaminants in water and keep it from from unwanted taste and odor.
The Puriclean II effectively removes cysts, particulates, lead, mercury, and asbestos. The fridge filter also reduces the taste and smell of chlorine. However, it retains beneficial fluoride in the water to make sure you still harvest the benefits of pure and clean drinking water that your refrigerator dispenses.
The Maytag Puriclean II can be used with most Maytag and Jenn-Air refrigerators with special filter access inside. It fits into side by side, cabinet depth and French door refrigerator types. The filter needs to be replaced every 12 months to ensure maximum protection against most contaminants that threaten your drinking water dispensed from the refrigerator.
Whirlpool: KitchenAid Side-by-Side Quarter Turn Refrigerator Filter
Whirlpool is a trusted name among homeowners. Aside from the kitchen and cooking appliances it has become known for, Whirlpool also offers KitchenAid water filters that can work with Whirlpool and KitchenAid side-by-side refrigerators that come with built in water dispenser. The KitchenAid Quarter Turn Water Filter 4396508P is rated with 4.6 stars for effectiveness and reliability.
The KitchenAid water filter can remove the taste and odor of chlorine in water, and can also remove most contaminants such as mercury, lead, and particulates. The filter is easy to install and replace with its quarter turn feature. And without any drop in filtration quality, the water filter is able to retain beneficial fluoride found in water.
This water filter comes in a pack of two so you get more value for what you pay. The filter needs to be replaced every six months, which means the pack of two filters is enough to last you for an entire year. This is an extremely popular refrigerator water filter choice.
PUR: Push-Button Refrigerator Ice and Water Filter
Another leading band of refrigerator water filter is PUR, which offers several different filtration systems in the market. To cater to those who dispense water from their refrigerators, PUR offers the Push-Button Refrigerator Ice and Water Filter, which gets 4.7 stars on Amazon. The affordable refrigerator water filter can purify the drinking water dispensed by your refrigerator as well as the water used in making ice.
The PUR Push-Button ice and water filter can easily fit into refrigerators with push-button in-grille water filter provision from a variety of brands such as Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana, and Jenn-Air. The PUR water filter can produce clean and fresh-tasting water and pure and clean ice. It effectively filters out contaminants including lead, cysts, and benzene, among many others, without removing beneficial fluoride. It also reduces the taste and odor of chlorine.
The PUR Push-Button Refrigerator Ice and Water Filter needs to be replaced every six months to maintain its high level of water filtration quality.

What filter media should I use in my canister filter?
I have a 125g freshwater planted tank. I am using a Rena XP4 canister filter. What media should I put in it? It came with carbon, several form filter pads and some Bio Chem Stars.
Nice tank size have fun...
the best setups for tanks that big are 2 filters..your canister and liek a aquaclear 30 or bigger up top.
the canister you use for biological and cleaning so tons of sponges and ceramics...no carbon or other chemical medias..there never needed anyways...
this way you don;t have to break down the canister every month..but every few months..cripes my eheim i break down every 3-4 months....
Use the HOB for aeration and custom media...the basket inthe aquaclears are perfect..use more sponges and bio-max but if you need to add carbon or ammina lock you simply add it here and dispose of when needed..
the best carbon you can get works for 5 days tops and then becomes a phosphate leaker..but sometimes its needed...(someone who smokes puts there hand in the tank)..simply add the bag to the basket and your good, no need to totally break down the huge canister.
for bio i would use eheim substrat...good stuff.
good luck
