What is the best time to get pregnant? It's a simple question, but be careful. A quick search on the internet can return some very wrong answers to this question which, if followed, could actually prevent you from getting pregnant.

Let me give you the simple answer. The best time to get pregnant is during what is called your "peak" fertile phase, which is the 4 to 5 days preceding ovulation. The confusing part can be how to know when you actually enter your peak fertile phase so that you don't miss the opportunity. Statistically, very few women actually have 28 day cycles where they ovulation on day 14. Some women may have 28 day cycles, but a very short luteal phase which could mean ovulation won't occur until day 20, or a longer luteal phase which could cause ovulation to occur on day 11. Many women have cycles which vary greatly from the standard 28 days and therefore they have no idea when they really ovulate. If you really want to get pregnant, don't try to guess. You want to do your research and find your peak fertile phase.

Buy an over the counter ovulation predictor kit and/or fertility monitor. The fertility monitor worked much better for me, but again, every woman is different so pick whichever you prefer. These kits test for your LH surge, the hormone surge that occurs right before ovulation telling your body that it is time to release the egg. Also, and this is very important, be sure you are accurately charting your basal body temperature every day. It is possible to have an LH surge but not actually ovulate. The only way to confirm ovulation is to see a sustained temperature rise for several days after ovulation occurs.

Using these methods will allow you to pinpoint your ovulation so you can be certain of your peak fertile phase and know the best time to get pregnant for you. If after a couple of months you are not detecting an LH surge and you are not seeing a temperature rise to indicate ovulation, don't wait. Call your doctor immediately so they can help you uncover and correct any ovulation problems.
