has anyone ever converted their VW Golf power windows to manual ones?

it's apparently a common problem in Mark 3 Golfs (mine's an N reg) that the power window mechanism wears out (a tiny nylon grip) and leaves the window to slide up and down of its own accord. I've changed three mechs so far and am getting bored of pulling the door apart. Has anyone succesfully installed a manual system instead. The only obstacle I can imagine is drilling the hole for the winder handle.

You may need a new door panel as well as a window regulator.

I think you're better off just replacing the entire door assembly. You can then sell your doors to offset some of the cost.
