I'm in no way a professional photographer, but I enjoy and love photography as a hobby. And I found that with Olympus SLR cameras, sometimes it's not about finding THE best camera. For hobbyists like me, maybe the more important thing is to find the best camera deal without compromising much of the quality. This is why I went for the 8-megapixel Evolt E500 digital SLR camera with 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 and 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 Zuiko lenses.
My brother has been a SLR camera user for years, and he currently has a 20D with 420EX flash and very expensive L series lenses. When I bought the E500 and the dual lens kit, even my brother had to agree that among all the cameras in the market right now, my E500 dual lens kit is the best deal for my money. We both also agreed that the E500 is lighter and more ergonomic than his 20D. Although my E500 pales in comparison to my brother's 20D in terms of taking pictures in low light, I read that this problem has been resolved in the E300 and with firmware upgrades.
We also loved how the rear LCD controls can access pretty much everything from exposure to flash speed to ISO, making it more user-friendly especially for newbie SLR users like me. However, my brother said that it would be nice if Olympus SLR cameras also had the small LCD up top which is found in Canon cameras that provides supplementary details and information on camera modes and settings. Six months later, I'm still very happy with my E500 and I've been using it more frequently. I even managed to talk three of my friends into getting the E500 dual lens kit as well.
My brother and I went to India just recently to tour Agra, visit the Sikhanders tomb, Taj Mahal, and other amazing sites in the country. At the end of the trip, I have to say, my pictures looked better than the ones my brother had taken with his fancy camera and ridiculously expensive accessories. Well, his pictures definitely showed more detail, but in terms of color saturation and overall look and presentation, my pictures were better.
I do admit, however, that my camera wasn't able to take good action shots when we were on a speeding bus. My brother's camera came out with amazing action shots and low-light pictures. When I tried taking pictures in the evening, some of my pictures didn't have proper focus, unlike my brother's camera which also focused on the same subject as mine. Like I said, I'm not a pro, so maybe some of the "flaws" I report here may be caused not by the camera but by the user.
Getting the perfect camera, is never an easy thing, especially with the way digital technology is constantly changing. Fortunately, there are plenty of helpful websites online, that can narrow down your search and help you find the camera with all the features important to you.
Olympus E-3 Digital Slr
In the four-odd years between the launch of the Olympus E-1 - the camera that heralded the first all-new SLR system for over a decade - and its successor the E-3, the DSLR landscape has changed beyond recognition, with prices dropping and capabilities soaring. The world moved on whilst the Olympus professional system stood still, looking more and more irrelevant and less and less like a serious contender to the long-standing Canon/Nikon duopoly in the pro market.
Olympus has finally announced their long-awaited flagship DSLR camera, the E-3. Billed as a pure pro camera, the Olympus E-3 is really more comparable to the cameras by Olympus's competitors that we've been categorizing as semi-pro, such as the Pentax K10D, Canon 40D, and Nikon D200. Whatever you call it though, there's no question that the new E-3 represents a sizable leap forward in technology and sophistication for the Olympus SLR line.
With the E-3, Olympus introduces their first new auto focus sensor in years: an 11-point array, each point consisting of twin cross-type AF sensors. They're claiming this is the fastest AF system on the market. Combined with greater 1.15x magnification in the E-3's viewfinder, framing and focusing with this Four-Thirds camera is a lot easier than past Olympus models.
A new shutter mechanism in the Olympus E-3 delivers 1/8,000 second speed, and 1/250 flash sync, and an expected lifetime of 150,000 cycles. Mirror blackout time is also said to be low, but there are no official numbers yet. Three dedicated processors handle three separate functions: one for image stabilization, one for auto focus, and the TruePic III for image processing. A UDMA-compatible Compact Flash slot promises fast write times, and the additional xD-Picture Card slot adds extra storage.
Body-based image stabilization is built into the Olympus E-3, taking advantage of the company's Supersonic Wave Drive motor technology to drive the anti-shake system. A separate motor drives the Supersonic Wave Filter to remove dust.
The E-3 has a new Auto focus sensor from which is an 11 point array. Three dedicated processors can be found inside the camera, one for the Auto focus, one for Image stabilizing and the Trupic Turbo III for processing the images. The Compact flash slot is UDMA compatible to make use of the ultra fast cards that are starting to emerge onto the market.
The E-3 has a new 10Mp sensor which has a faster read time to help enable the 5fps continuous shooting facility and the top speed of the shutter is 1/8000 sec.
The buttons on the back of the camera consist of the Exposure and Focus lock, the Function button which is a small Menu for access to the most frequently used features. Other buttons available for wandering fingers are the Focus point selector, Playback button, the Navigation pad and Image stabiliser. These are to the right of the flip out screen and four other buttons are found beneath it. They are the Delete, Info, Menu and Display options. The Power switch can be found at the bottom as well as a release switch for the
The top of the camera has access to the White balance and ISO ratings as well as a useful reset option by pressing two buttons simultaneously. Bracketing adjust can be found just above the shutter release button.

Whats a good/fast Olympus compatible zoom lens (four thirds) for low light/concert photography?
I'm looking for a good lens for shooting concerts at night or in night clubs. It needs to be compatible with current four thirds based Olypums DSLRs. I bought a Sigma 1.4 EX Aspherical HSM Wide Angle Lens and its great for times when I want to take wide stage shots, but I'm looking for something I can use when I don't have pit access and need to get some close shots of the bands from the crowd. The Olympus Zuiko 35-100mm F2.0 Zoom Lens is great, but I cant afford it and its also pretty huge. Anyone have some recommendations for a lens that would fit my needs? I just need something fast and with some level of zoom on it. If it matters Im using a Olympus E500. Thanks in advance for your feedback!
I have an Olympus E-500 and and E-510. My honest opinion... if you really are committed to doing this kind of photography, you may as well sell your Olympus and get a Nikon. The lenses that you really NEED for this from Olympus or Sigma, it will probably be cheaper to by a Nikon D90 and a decent lens. I really like my Olympus(es), but my next camera will be a Nikon. No comparison when it comes to lens availability and price. The E-500 is especially awful when it comes to focusing in low light as well. My 510 is better by quite a bit but still not great.
